END OF SEASON 8

NETCHASERS

Action / Thriller

The Cast: Nicholas Cage, Reese Witherspoon, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Shawn Wayans

The Director and Producer: J.J. Abrams
The Screenwriter: Steve Connors

The Plot: ‘The Crow’ (P.S.Hoffman) is a legendary hacker that has been acting for years. The FBI Special Agent Blanche Simms (R.Witherspoon), a genius in computers that leads the C.C.U. (Cyber Crime Unit), has been trying to identify and capture him for so long.

Although he has proved to be the best hacker in the world, The Crow usually didn’t use his talent for nothing more than accessing to confidential databases and sites just for fun. But things seem to have changed lately. Simms is convinced that The Crow is behind some recent events: mainly, big amounts of money stolen from big corporations through the net and some attacks to public buildings that have collapsed due to manipulations in their electric or gas computerized systems. But Simms has the suspect that what ‘The Crow’ has been doing is just training to do something really big.

One day, The Crow himself contacts Agent Simms by e-mail. He tells him he has decided to blackmail the US Government. He wants an immense amount of money or he will start to commit more serious attacks to public installations. As a proof of it, he provokes an accident in NYC’s underground where three people die.

A game of cat and mouse begins. Simms will appoint two agents to help her: Dan Rother (N.Cage) and his partner Tee Williams (S.Wayans). Their mission is to avoid victims in The Crow’s attacks, as he usually announces what is going to be his next target.

So, while The Crow communicates with Agent Simms through the mail announcing his new attacks, Cage and Wayans make the street work, risking their life in The Crow’s targets: an electric plant, a Junior School, Grand Central Station… trying to deactivate on time The Crow’s manipulations of the computers systems. Usually, The Crow gives them some time to avoid major disasters. But the hacker is getting nervous as his money is not placed in the foreign accounts he has demanded and threads with causing a slaughter.

Simms is getting closer to identify him through the net thanks to his emails. But time is running out. The Crow announces a major attack to Kennedy’s Airport. He will interfere in the control tower and make two planes crash.

While Simms works desperately to identify him, Williams live a nightmare in NYC’s airport trying to avoid the planes crash and Rother waits in an helicopter Simms’ orders to go and capture The Crow.

Finally, Simms gets to discover where The Crow is writing his mails from. Cage goes there and captures him (in fact, he has to shoot and kill him)… but it may be too late. He has activated the programme to make the planes crash interfering all the communications between planes and the airport’s control tower. At the control tower, Williams uses a computer trying to recover the control of the communications with the planes with the help of Simms, working too on her computer.

They make it. Planes are saved. But it was all solved in the very last second.

Stark’s Comment: After the enormous success of their previous work together (‘Faction 12’), J.J. Abrams and Nicholas Cage team up again in this cyber-thriller written by Steve Connors. I hope it to be, without doubt, the last blockbuster of the Season. Nothing under 100 millions in box office is expected.

SYNDROME: END OF DAYS

Horror / Zombies

The Cast: Ben Affleck, Paula Patton, Thomas Haden Church, Abigail Breslin, Bill Paxton, Freddie Highmore, Jordan-Claire Green

The Director: Rob Cohen
The Screenwriter: Matt Kubrick
The Producer: Midnight Movies

The Plot: Stephen (B.Affleck) begins to lose his mind after the abduction of Amber (A.Breslin), who he has come to love like a daughter.

Soon he and Christopher the Veitnam Vet (T.H.Church) decide to form a party armed with guns to go out and look for her. After several zombie attacks and fights they find the camp full of bikers and criminals they are able to free her after a shootout and make their way back home.

Stephen and Janice (P.Patton) are married, Mark's (B.Paxton) paranoia soon takes a toll on him and shoots himself in the head.

When a hunting party doesn't make it back one night Christopher leads a group to go out and look for them and soon discover the bodies and it wasn't zombie's but bullets and a tape recorder of a voice telling them that hell is coming. When the bikers attack, the survivors are able to hold them off only until their fence is destroyed and all hell breaks loose as everyone must deal with zombies and bikers.

By the end only Stephen, Janice and the two other children Kevin and Monica (F.Highmore, J-C.Green) and a few other people that originally formed the encampment are left standing. In the end surrounded by dead bodies, they flee deep into the mountains to a small cabin in the woods hopefully away from all the danger.

Stark’s Comment: I honestly think that the Syndrome trilogy has not been treated fairly by critics (despite all the controversy about the cast). The two first movies made more than decent box offices of 78 and 45 millions, with very nice net gains of 91 and 23 millions respectively. Not many productions reach those numbers. These movies are a light entertainment based on the classic genre of zombies movies. And they are fun. So I hope moviegoers will return to theatres for this third and final episode.

MALEFICARUM

Drama / Dark

The Cast: Sean Penn, Nicole Kidman, Billy Bob Thornton, Kevin Costner, Alexander Gould, Jordan-Claire Green

The Director: Sofia Coppola
The Screenwriter: David Makalaster

The Plot: North Berwick,Scotland, 1590.The Emory family is doing pretty well, with the father Johnathan (S.Penn) having successfully set up shop as a retailer of fine goods for the local noblemen he and his wife Ilene (N.Kidman) and their daughter Brigitta (J-C. Green) and son John (A. Gould) almost live like nobles themselves. However when the local magistrate Leonard deClaire (K.Costner), on order of King James VI (B.B.Thornton), enacts a witch hunt after the king and a royal visitor was beset by allegedly mystical storms on an ocean journey nearby Ilene ends up under the knife.

deClaire rounds up several women in the vicinity, among which is Ilene (in fact because he was spurned by her when competing unjustly with Johnathan for her affection). Johnathan desperately tries to take action, defending Ilene in the coming trials, arguing that witchcraft isn't real and trying to get the rest of the town to revolt against the cruelty, all of which can earn him the death penalty himself.

Meanwhile, Brigitta is forced to care for both herself and John as Johnathan becomes naturally engulfed in his battle.

At the end of the trials, some hope is lit as the tribunal finds it doubtful that Ilene is a witch, but that hope is extinguished as the magistrate informs the town that the king himself wishes to test the witches, and Ilene is sent away with the others to King James' court. In desperation, Johnathan takes Brigitta and John with him to Edinburgh, leaving everything behind. There they live as lowly beggars as Johnathan can do nothing but watch as Ilene goes through the test that King James sets for her. She is strung up outside the castle, latched in a scold's bridle and kept without sleep. For days the torture goes on with King James visiting daily to speak to her. Finally she cracks, and admits to a crime she didn't commit. As she is released, she spots Johnathan in the crowd and shouts at him to spare Brigitta and John from what is to come. At first, Johnathan refuses, but ultimately realizes the futility of it and decides to head back to North Berwick, so as to fulfill Ilene's dying wish. As they leave, smoke can be seen in the distance from Ilene's punishment, where she is garrotted and burnt. John asks his father:
"Isn't mother coming home with us?"
Johnathan tries to be as encouraging as a man who just lost his wife can be.
"Mother is always with us."

Stark’s Comment: A quality production that finally means the awaited debut of Sofia Coppola directing a CMP’s movie. Based on the historical trials of North Berwick, Scotland, and inspired by the historical figure of Agnes Sampson. I like so much this movie, but I am conscious that it can be a danger in box office terms. The magnificent acting work and the talent behind the cameras should be a good reason to attract real movie lovers to theatres and not just zombies and computers fans. Let’s cross fingers.

FLASHMAN'S TRAVELS: The adventures of the rascal, pey and lovely Harry Flashman go on with this second episode that will take him to India and Madagascar. Rupert Everett returns as the naughty British Victorian soldier. But Mike Newell won’t be directing this sequel. Kenneth Branagh, who played a major role in the first movie, will make his debut as director in CMP with this production. He won’t be acting in the movie this time.

THE LAND OF NOD: Peter Jackson, tired of waiting for the screenplay of the third ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ movie, has accepted to produce and direct this new Marcus Trax’s story. It is expected to be one of the big events of next Season. The movie – a classic fantasy adventure with ogres, witches, wizards, knights and princess included – will mix live characters and digitally generated ones, in the line of the Game Boy movies. Two young stars will play the starring couple: Freddie Highmore, who can be seen in this week’s release ‘Syndrome: End Of Days’, and Josh Hutcherson, seen in ‘Flashes Of Life’ and ‘The Lollipop Man’.

SILVER SABLE: Names included in the cast are beginning to be announced by CMP. Sam Elliott (‘A Horse With No Name’) plays Silver / Heigl’s father, a famous Nazis hunter. A rising young star after her success with ‘Paternal Nightmare’, AnnaSophia Robb, will be Silver’s sweet cousin. And the main villain of the function, a most wanted international terrorist, will be played by Tim Robbins (‘The Passion Beneath’, ‘The Company’, ‘The Sex Monster’).

BIRD OF THE FEATHER: Cast of voices for this animated feature directed by Chris Columbus completes with the names of Allison Janey, in her first work for the Studio; Andy Garcia, not seen or heard in CMP since ‘The Law’; and Samuel L. Jackson, whose voice was also heard recently in ‘Lobo’s Back’.

REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS: Pam Grier makes her debut in CMP playing the tough principal of the school. And the group of naughty – but sexy – girls to be reformed will include CMP’s debutantes like Eliza Dushku, Michelle Rodriguez, Kaitlin Olson and Zoe Bell together with no other than Valkyrie herself, Rose McGowan. Get ready for fights in the mud…

LYING WISH: Alexis Bledel returns to CMP after her work in the multi-awarded musical ‘Carousel’. This time she plays Michael Cera’s love interest in this new Josh Collins’ comedy.

MARY’S DARK SIDE: Another comedy greenlighted, this time written by Steve Connors. Long time ago, Zach Braff directed and starred for CMP the cult comedy ‘Contract Killing For Dummies’. And he returns to combine acting and directing again with this funny comedy about a wild Thanksgiving celebration. His couple in the movie will mean another interesting return: Kate Hudson, coming back to comedy after her acclaimed dramatic work in ‘Velcro’.

THE DARK TOWER: THE DRAWING OF THE THREE: GMA Nominee Angela Bassett (‘Dream Of A King’, ‘The Legend Of Zelda’) stars one of the episodes included in the movie. And Chazz Palminteri makes his CMP’s debut playing a drug dealer.

BOND SCUM: This Richard Franzwa’s comedy about a bond-esque villain fighting against bureaucracy to rule the world pretends to be a kind of comedians reunion in the line of the Lieutenant USA’s movies. Not only Jim Carrey and Sasha Baron Cohen will be seen in the movie. Other comedians included in the cast will be Mike Myers, Leslie Nielsen and Tim Allen. Some surprising cameos have also been announced.

DRAWING DEAD: The solid group of Asiatic stars launched to CMP’s universe by ‘Nagasaki Daydreams’ – Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, Ziyi Zhang and Ken Watanabe - keep working regularly for the Studio. Now’s the turn for GMA Nominee Chow Yun-Fat, who plays the inevitable triad leader in this Tarantino’s production.

Best Screenplay GMA Winners
Commented by Joey Stark

The importance of the screenplay is even higher in CMP than in any other Studio. A good screenplay is the necessary base for a good movie. We have all seen good screenplays turned into horrible movies but it is very difficult to make a good movie out of a bad screenplay.

Luckily, CMP has the best team of screenwriters any Movie Studio could dream. As my big brother Harry always says, it is our screenwriters who have made the Studio as big as it is.

The fight for the Best Screenplay GMA is always a tough one (and I know it well after a few defeats). In fact, I would consider this award as one of the main categories at the GMA. And the best proof of that is that quite often Best Screenplay winner and Best Picture winner meet.

Today, it is my pleasure to take a look at some of my colleagues work. The Best Screenplay GMA winners were…

DEADLY SINS by Brian Kelley: Oh, boy, that was a hard night for me. The other two screenplays nominees had been written by me (‘The Heirs’ and ‘The Crusades’). But Kelley’s story about a rabbi accused of murdering his wife, based on true events, was the deserved winner. It was an absorbing thriller with a perfectly paced screenplay. It was a shame that its author, Brian Kelley, retired so soon from CMP, as he was such a promising talent.

FOOLS GAME by James Bradley: The second fable from writer James Bradley and director Wes Anderson after the great ‘Bill and the Rocket Man’ and before the third one, ‘Man In The Mirror’. A dark comedy about a group of bored rich people that have fun inviting a nerd to dinner just to laugh at him. Based on a French movie. One of the best comedies ever released by CMP. The screenplays defeated were another Bradley’s story, the road movie ‘Chevrolet’, and the first Wild Cards movie, written by Matt Kubrick.

THE TOYMAKER by James Bradley: Second win in a row for Bradley. This time, it was a wonderful historical adventure in the French Revolution times. Personally, still is one of my favourite CMP’s movies ever. The challengers were two heavy-weights: the first episode of The Great War Series, by Jack Hammer, and ‘Home’, the epic Iraq war movie written by Matt Kubrick. Probably, three of the best screenplays ever written by CMP’s authors.

CAROUSEL by Ted Froats: The remake of the musical ‘Carousel’ surprisingly became the most awarded movie ever at the GMA, although it didn’t make it for Best Picture or Director. Froats wrote an adapted screenplay and it was a surprise for me to see how it defeated two works I liked more than this: the second episode of The Great War Series, also by Jack Hammer, and ‘Warland’… written by me. Yes, it was my third defeat. I hate smiling when I hear somebody else’s name at the ceremony…

THREE WOODEN CROSSES by Ted Froats: A country song turned into a movie… and a second victory for Froats. The movie didn’t work in box office but the screenplay was a solid dramatic work that beat two other dramas: my personal favourite of that edition, ‘Hollyweird’, first nomination for Josh Collins; and ‘Flashes Of Life’, an intense and heartbreaking drama also written by Froats.

SCHROEDINGER’S LITTERBOX by Ben Tyler: Again, a comedy was able to win the screenplay award after ‘Fools Game’. An original and brilliant story that turned this production into a cult movie adored by legions of fans. A debutante, Ben Tyler, reached instant stardom with this screenplay and became a most respected author in CMP. Two tough rivals this time too: the epic ‘Pompeii’, by James Bradley, and the dramatic ‘Blink’, by Josh Collins.

VELCRO by Josh Collins: Finally, Collins could take the statue home. The hyper-dramatic story of mother and daughter dealing with abuse, drugs and prostitution deserved the recognition of the voters, although box office had mistreated the movie. Froats and Collins fought again alone for the award in a funny public duel. Froats was the author of the nominee ‘Only In America’, that finally won Best Director and Best Picture, while Collins was also nominee with the nice dramedy ‘Lyra’.

So here are the statistics for the CMP’s writers (Nominations / Wins):

James Bradley: 4 / 2
Ted Froats: 4 / 2
Josh Collins: 4 / 1
Brian Kelley: 1 / 1
Ben Tyler: 1 / 1
Joey Stark: 3 / 0
Matt Kubrick: 2 / 0
Jack Hammer: 2 / 0

The zombies trilogy written by Matt Kubrick reaches its conclusion with this week’s release of its third episode, ‘Syndrome: End Of Days’. And here is a pic of the two lead stars of the film, Ben Affleck and Paula Patton, at the New York Premiere of the movie.

News about franchises. (Yes, I’m considering creating a specific section for all the news that CMP generates around its franchises, an obvious marketing strategy to keep us hooked to those… yawnnn… wonderful sagas the Studio develops). Turn for ‘The Avengers’. Director and producer Gore Verbinski has announced a few things about it. There will be a third Avengers adventure (oh, yeah, big surprise…). As it happened with Downey Jr./Ironman in the first movie and Norton/Hulk in the second one, the third one will also introduce a famous superhero previously seen in other Studio’s movies (big surprise?). Verbinski also confirmed that previously to that third episode CMP will release a spin off based on one of the characters of the saga (no big surprise: CMP knows how to squeeze a profitable franchise ala Wild Cards). And, last, Verbinski insinuated that he could leave the franchise in somebody else’s hands after the third instalment. As you can see, everything very unpredictable…

And now the turn for Wild Cards (and this week I won’t talk again about Silver Sable unless CMP bribes me to do it). Matt Kubrick has also confirmed that there will be a fifth mainstream episode of the franchise in the future. Before, Joey Stark has written the third spin off. Probably, that fifth instalment could mean the end of the saga and - also and only ‘probably’ - it could be co-written by the two authors involved in it, Kubrick and Stark, so they could close there together all the plots open in the franchise.

Midnight Movies at full speed. You all know what Midnight Movies is: the independent production company owned by Matt Kubrick and dedicated to develop his caprices (yes, those cheap horror flicks and violence shows he loves so much to produce to bomb his own prestige as moviemaker). Well, for what I know, the B-series (and that’s a generous definition) factory is working hard to have ready quite a bunch of its usual products for the next Seasons. Slasher, exploitation and horror movies are the trademarks of this company that will strongly increase its activity in the coming future. Creepy.

What has happened with Crazy Moon Movies Database? The useful and interesting site created by David Makalaster has been out of reach for a few weeks by now. I hope it returns soon. Hey, David, where do you think journalists like me take their information from? Do you think I have it all in my head or what, man? Come on, fix it or I might be fired!

A peculiar list. ‘Variety’ has published the list of what they consider the six most powerful stars in CMP’s universe. And what ‘powerful’ means here? Easy. It means that they have been so successful in their works for CMP that the Studio would immediately green light almost any pitch with their names involved. All lists are arguable but, anyway, they are fun too, so here is ‘the Power List’ elaborated by ‘Variety’ and the reason why:
1-Will Smith: 9 works for CMP. No flops. And 6 out of them have overcome the magic ‘100 millions’ in box office. Even if only his voice is heard (‘Game Boy 1 & 2’) or if only makes a cameo (‘The Critic’), Smith seems capable of fulfilling with his only presence all movie theatres.
2-Steven Spielberg: 7 works for CMP, either as director, producer or both. No flops. 5 out of them with box offices superior of 100 millions. Need to say more? His name in the credits is also a guarantee of success.
3-George Lucas: producer of 6 CMP movies. No flops. 5 out of 6 overcame the ‘100’ landmark, 3 out of 6 also overcame the ‘200’ landmark. And what does that mean? Power, a lot of power. Will his plan of making his debut as director in CMP with the sequel of ‘The Legend Of Zelda’ change this winning strike? We’ll see.
4-Colin Farrell: 8 movies for CMP. No flops. 4 of them made more than 100 millions in box office. His work in three of the most acclaimed CMP’s sagas (The Heirs, The Great War Series and Hitman) has made his prestige rise to the stars and beyond so the Studio is looking forward to have him back as soon as possible.
5-Ben Stiller: 5 works for CMP, 4 as an actor, 1 as director. His only flop was when he directed ‘Eureka!’. But, as an actor, his last two works (‘The Shrinking Man’ and ‘The Lollipop Man’) were amazing hits at box office. Reason enough to be included in this list (at least, for the guys at ‘Variety’, not for me), although some other comedians like Steve Carrel or Will Ferrell have been pretty successful too lately.
6-Keira Knightley: 12 movies for CMP. Only one slight flop (the first ‘Uncommon Valour’ episode lost only 800.000 dollars). 5 movies overcame the ‘100 millions’. Being the muse of John Daws (she has already worked in 8 movies written by him) has been so profitable for Keira and has made her the only woman in this ‘Power List’ and, consequently, the most powerful actress in CMP.
