SILVER SABLE AND THE GENESIS COALITION

Action / Superhero

The Cast: Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler, Clive Owen, Sam Elliott, Dominic Monaghan, Eric Balfour, Bo Hoskins. Cameo by Tobey Maguire.

The Director and Producer: Bryan Singer
The Screenwriter: Joey Stark

The Plot:

An spectacular chase of motorboats is taking place in an unknown swamp. A man named Ivan Trefkov is driving the one trying to escape. Quentino (D.Monaghan) is driving the one chasing him. As the two motorboats get closer, we get to see Silver Sable (K.Heigl) jumping from Quentino’s to Trefkov’s. Silver and Trefkov have a violent fight as the motorboard runs without control. As they fight, the motorboard approaches to a huge waterfall. Trefkov falls on the motorboard’s floor and Silver puts a gun in his forehead.

‘Where’s my father?’, he shouts at Trefkov, ‘Tell me or I’ll kill you right here right now.’
‘Let’s go together, baby’, answers Trefkov, activating an explosive he is holding in his hand.

Silver is about to shoot her gun when the motorboard falls down the waterfall. She jumps from the motorboard. As she is freefalling down the abyss a small helicopter appears. The pilot is Chen (E.Balfour). He throws a cable to Silver and she picks it up in the air as she is falling. Hanging from the cable, Silver sees how the motorboard with Trefkov in it falls down and violently explodes in the air.

CREDITS

Silver is at Castle Sable, her home in Symkaria, training. Uncle Morty (B.Hoskins) tells her he needs to talk with her. He tells Silver that he is worried about her: she is getting too obsessed lately with the search for his father and taking too many risks. Silver is not accepting any new jobs lately, too busy following any hint that can help her to find her father. Even Quentino and Chen are getting tired of following her in too risky operations that take them nowhere, like the recent chase of Trefkov, a supposed member of the Genesis Coalition. Uncle Morty tells Silver that she should forget a bit about her father and go back to ordinary business.

But Silver does not want to hear her uncle’s advises. She is absolutely convinced that her father is alive and that the criminal organization known as the Genesis Coalition has something to do with his disappearance.

Later, Quentino and Chen also talk with Silver. They tell her that they are not happy working for her anymore. The Wild Pack was supposed to be created to chase criminals and terrorists. But they are only following failed hints about the Genesis Coalition lately that always become useless and too dangerous. Silver, mad at them, tells them that they can leave the Wild Pack if they want, so Quentino and Chen abandon Castle Sable and consequently the Wild Pack can be considered dissolved.

A few days later, Silver gets a mysterious invitation for dinner from Dr. Doom (C.Owen). She knows Dr. Doom is a criminal who lives in Latveria, a neighbor Republic of Symkaria. Against uncle Morty’s advise, Silver accepts to visit Dr. Doom.

Dr. Doom receives Silver at his mansion in Latveria. During the dinner, he tells Silver he has a deal to offer her. He has got to know she is anxiously looking for the secret base of the Genesis Coalition. He will tell her where it is if she does something for him. She has to go to the US and steal the Harmodium , a mysterious outer space rock recently found by the NASA that is said to have an infinite energy power. He is very much interested in having it for some secret experiments he is making. The Harmodium is kept under extreme security measures in an army base in Florida.

Silver accepts the deal.

So she flies to Florida and, all dressed in black and with a balaclava covering her face, she gets into this Army base at night, saving all the guards and the sophisticated laser-ray security systems, until she reaches the room where the green rock, the Harmodium, is kept. As she is about to take it, somebody interrupts her. It’s no other than her old special friend Spiderman (T.Maguire).

He was there to protect the Harmodium until it is taken to a safer place. Spiderman and Silver have a violent fight. Finally, Spiderman jumps on her and seats on her stomach immobilizing her. He takes off her balaclava and he is absolutely shocked when he realizes the thief is no other than Silver.

‘You?’, he says, ‘What’s going on here?’
‘I’m sorry’. It’s all Silver says before reacting.

Spiderman is so shocked that Silver’s attack takes him by surprise. Silver gets rid of him, knocks him out and escapes with the Harmodium.

Back to Latveria, Silver gives the rock to Dr. Doom. So Dr. Doom tells her where the Genesis Coalition’s hideout is: somewhere in the frozen mountains of Kamchatka.

Silver gets a call from her uncle. He asks her what’s going on. Spiderman has contacted him and told him. ‘Are you crazy, Silver?’, uncle Morty yells at her, ‘In your obsession, you have become a criminal!’ Silver cuts the communication. She doesn’t want to hear anyone.

Silver flies to the frozen territory of Kamchatka and travels alone in a sleigh pulled by eight dogs through ice, snow and blizzard until she arrives to the mountain where the Genesis Coalition’s hideout is supposed to be. As she is approaching to it, a mine explodes under her sleigh and she loses conscious.

When she wakes up, she is chained at a dungeon. And her old mate and boyfriend Foreigner (G.Butler) is in front of her. Foreigner explains her that, when he realized Silver was leaving him and falling in love with Spiderman, his whole world and beliefs wrecked down. Then, he decided to join the Genesis Coalition.

‘The Genesis Coalition is not a criminal organization’, explains Foreigner, ‘It just works by itself to solve the problems of the world. We don’t collaborate with any Government. We just do what we think is right. And if we have to act against the law, we do. And if we have to commit a crime to reach our final purposes, we do. And if we have to get involved in drug trafficking or robberies to finance our operations, we do. We don’t take criminals to jail. We exterminate them. We have gone beyond what The Avengers, the Justice League or any other group has ever gone. Law, Governments, morality, honesty… are only limitations in the war against crime. Many people think that we are like HYDRA or any other criminal organization. But we are not. We are the ultimate answer to crime and terrorism.’

‘If you commit crimes to fight crimes, you also become criminals’, answers Silver.

‘Who says so? The Genesis Coalition does not respond to any law or tribunal. We only respond to our own interests and objectives without useless limitations.’

Foreigner offers Silver to join the Genesis Coalition. She refuses. She asks Foreigner if he knows where her father is. Foreigner just smiles and leaves the dungeon.

Silver is left alone and chained at the dungeon for days. Without any food or drink, she soon begins to fall into faints and hallucinations. One day, she opens up her eyes and sees her father in front of her.

‘Hello, my dear’, he whispers, ‘I am so sorry you have to go through this’.
‘Father?’, she whispers. But her father’s image disappears.

Next time Foreigner appears at the dungeon, she is extremely weak. He asks her if she has considered time enough the offer to join them. Silver says she has. She wants to join the Coalition. Foreigner smiles: ‘Now you are ready to come with me’.

So Silver is taken to the presence of the Genesis Coalition’s leader. And when she sees him she just can’t believe it.

It’s Ernst Sablinova. It’s her father (S.Elliott).

Ernst explains Silver that he got tired after all the years fighting against ex nazis and criminals under the rules of different Governments. He felt frustrated too many times as some criminals, with their expensive lawyers, got soft convictions or how some Governments were too weak in their policies against crime. When Latveria’s Government decided to cut the funds given to his organization, he finally decided to disappear and create his lifetime project: the Genesis Coalition. An organization designed to battle all kind of criminals clandestinely.

‘I didn’t want to tell you about it until you had grown up enough. It was me who asked Dr. Doom to offer you the robbery of the Harmodium. It was a test. I wanted to know if you could break the law when the reason is good enough. And you did. You and I are the same, my dear’, he tells Silver, ‘You are ready to join me.’

‘Dr. Doom and you are friends?’, she asks.

Ernst explains her that making things by himself wasn’t so easy. So, to fight some criminals, he had to make deals with some others. The Genesis Coalition has collaborated with guys like Dr. Doom or Baron Von Strucker in some illegal operations just in order to get from them financing or useful information.

‘I cannot accept this’, says Sable, holding up her tears as she realizes what has become of her beloved father. ‘No, father, I am not like you’. Then, she suddenly knocks out Foreigner with a karate kick and runs away from the room. Alarms sound all over the hideout. Guards chase Silver, who tries to find some way out.

Silver arrives to a kind of garage where she takes a sophisticated snow-bike. She rides it and jumps with it through a big glass window as the guards are surrounding her. It’s a long fall but she manages to stay on the bike. Soon, other bikes are chasing her downhill. It’s a highly dangerous descent and some bikes crash on the way.

Finally, Silver herself crashes and a bike reaches her. It’s Foreigner. They face each other in a narrow way beside a deep ravine.

‘I loved you. Now I will have to kill you’, tells her Foreigner before they start a violent karate fight.

As they are fighting, Silver sees a fighter airplane coming out from behind the mountains. It is flying to the hideout. As it passes flying low close to her, she sees Quentino at the pilot seat. She waves to stop him but he does not understand her signs.

Batteries from the hideout shoot the airplane. The airplane answers shooting two missiles to the hideout. It all explodes in a huge ball of fire and snow. Silver understands that her father has probably died.

Distracted by the explosion, she is kicked by Foreigner. She falls down the ravine. Foreigner jumps onto his snow-bike and runs away.

The airplane lands close to the ravine. Quentino and Chen come out and they find Silver holding desperately to a rock to avoid falling down. They rescue her.

Once in the airplane, they explain Silver that Uncle Morty called them when she disappeared without a trace. They went to Dr. Doom’s mansion and demanded him to tell them where she could be. Dr. Doom agreed to tell them as he said he felt sympathy for Silver. So they flied there to rescue her.

‘Did you find your father?’, asks her Quentino.

Silver looks at the top of the mountain where the Genesis Coalition’s hideout was. Now it’s all ruins and columns of smoke. No chance for survivors.

‘No’, she answers in a sad way.

As the three of them get in the plane, Silver tells them they have work to do. ‘Have you heard about the recent robbery of the Harmodium? Recovering it will be our next mission.’, she tells, ‘But before that I think I have to apologize to a few people...’

The airplane takes off and leaves the mountains.

Stark’s Comment:
Here is the awaited sequel of the biggest success in CMP’s History. ‘Silver Sable’ made 130 millions in box office, with net gains of 113 millions. But its sequel ‘Silver Sable and The Wild Pack’ pulverized all existing records with a box office of 352 million and net gains of 420 millions. I confess I am very nervous with this release. If the movie does not become a huge blockbuster after the numbers of its predecessor, it would be more than embarrassing.

Behind The Scenes:
-Bryan Singer had to refuse against his will directing and producing ‘Dragonlance’ due to his commitment with this production.
-AnnaSophia Robb, who played Silver’s niece, is the only cast member of the two previous installments of the saga that does not appear in this one. Joey Stark has admitted that ‘we could not find a place for her in the plot’.
-The new life of Silver’s father as leader of the Genesis Coalition is an original idea not based on the Silver Sable’s comics.
-Clive Owen / Dr. Doom is the only novelty in the cast of the saga.
-At this moment, Synger and Stark have not decided yet if there will be a fourth movie of the saga or not.

THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND: THE THREE TRIALS

Adventure / Comedy

The Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Michelle Rodriguez, Judy Reyes, Michael Chiklis, Seth Green. Voice of Tim Curry.

The Director: Mike Newell
The Screenwriter: David Makalaster

The Plot:

Guybrush Threepwood (Eisenberg) is a meek 25-year old who just moved out of his mother's basement (Mostly because his mother just died of dysentery) on Melee Island to explore the world. All the time spent listening to the old sailors in the local pub and reading old log books he'd "found" at the docks have given him one clear goal in life: To become the most fearsome pirate ever!
This in spite of the fact that his most useful skill is being able to hold his breath for ten minutes straight. Luckily, he finds that three actual pirates (Seth Green among them, looking very much like Jack Sparrow) have sat down quite permanently in the local pub due to the ghost pirate LeChuck (Voice Of Tim Curry) putting them out of business. After some groveling they agree to make him a pirate, IF he can pass the trials of Courage, Swordfighting and Treasure finding; the three most important skills for a pirate.

First, he takes on treasurefinding and the pirates hand him a shovel to set him on the way. On the way out of town he bumps into Sheriff Fester Shinetop (Chiklis) who takes an immediate dislike to him and gives him a long list of things illegal on Melee including piracy, treasure hunting (It should all go to the governor), swordfighting and holding ones breath for longer than 7 minutes. When Fester gets suspicous about the shovel Guybrush convinces him he's on his way to play a game of real life whack-a-mole. Before reaching to far into the forest Guybrush realizes he doesn't know where to even start looking and slumps down on a stump and stares off into the forest. THAT's when he spots the big X on the ground and the nearby signpost reading "Here lies the legendary Lost Treasure of Melee Island™, please leave some treasure for other tourists." He excitedly begins to dig to find.... A T-shirt! With the print "I'm with pirate. ->" even. Dejected, he turns back towards town.

Back at the pub the pirates are getting rowdy from the grog and accepts the t-shirt with a hearty laugh at the print. Next they give him a sword for the sword fighting trial but warns him that it's no ordinary sword fighting; it's the grand tradition of Melee Island "Insult sword fighting". They send him to defeat the island's swordmaster Carla(Reyes). Turning around to leave, he collides with the governor's daughter, Elaine Marley (Rodriguez) and immediately has flash-forwards to them dating, kissing, marrying and settling down. Head-over heels in love, in other words. Elaine, thinking Guybrush is a real pirate confides in him that she would like to sign on under his command, being sick of being spoiled by her father, the governor. Guybrush dodges the issues by saying that he is only in port to invest in a new ship and that he can't leave before he's closed the deal. Elaine is doubtful that he would knowingly invest in any ship from "Stan's Moderately Used Vessels", the only shipwright on the island, but agrees to wait for him and join him on the high seas. As if walking on clouds, Guybrush heads for Carla's cabin only to be grabbed again by Fester Shinetop.

Fester threatens him, saying that "flirting is illegal". When Guybrush says theres no law for love Fester claims to make the law, revealing that he's been courting Elaine for quite some while, even having tattooed her misspelled name on his arm. He finally releases Guybrush who hurries away even more determined to woo Elaine.

When he reaches Carla's cabin, the swordmaster herself is lazing off in a rocking chair on the porch. She only acknowledge him with a selfassured laugh when he announces he has come for a duel. She scolds him for not knowing anything about insult swordfighting, saying it is more about keeping your opponent off mental balance with insults than keeping him off physical balance with your sword. She demonstrates by catching him by surprise and downing him in only two insults. Guybrush's only response is a stuttered "I am rubber, you are glue". But he gets back up fueled by his love for Elaine and with a trick up his sleeve. ("After all, I was the weedy kid in school, I've heard every insult you could throw at me!"). The next duel goes on throughout the cabin, tearing the place down, with some classical insults returning along with many new.

Carla: "Only once have I met such a coward!"
Guybrush: "He must have taught you everything you know."
C: "Killing you would be justifiable homicide!"
G: "Then killing you must be justifiable fungicide."

Carla finally concedes defeat after Guybrush manages to knock her sword aside. As a reward for beating her, Carla gives him... A T-shirt! This time with the print "I duelled the swordmaster and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!"

Guybrush now makes it back to the Scumm Bar only to find everyone hiding from something behind their chairs and the curtains. Confused, he bumps into the only one not hiding; a rather huge fellow(Actually demon pirate LeChuck[Curry]). Still infused with fighting spirit from the insult swordfight, he throws out a "Could somebody point King Kong here to the nearest skyscraper?"

LeChuck doesn't take too kindly to this and decides to hang Guybrush by his collar from thechandelier saying that Guybrush is lucky that he's on his way to his beloved Elaine. Just thenhe catches someone trying to sneak out of the bar, that someone turning out to be Elaine Marley herself.

He proudly proclaims "We've got a honeymoon boat to catch, love! We're going waaay south!" and grabs a struggling Elaine who cries for Guybrush.

The Sparrow-like pirate, previously hiding under the table, comes forth and says that Guybrush has to go after Lechuck! Guybrush refuses, saying that it's a job for a real pirate. Sparrow insists that he is a pirate, even when Guybrush asks about the third trial (to which he responds "Are you kidding? you called a demon pirate captain a b-movie ape! That's either courage or stupidity and right now, I'm thinking it's the former!"). Finally, he gives Guybrush his pirate hat and a coupon for 50% off at Stan's Moderately Used Vessels.

As a final shot, Guybrush bangs open the bar door and strikes a pose, saying "Hold on, my love! I'm coming for you! I mean... Yarr!". The Sparrow-like pirate approves.

Stark’s Comment:
Young generations may not remember that ‘Monkey Island’ was a bestselling computer game produced by LucasArts back in 1990 (although a Special Edition was released in 2009). Twenty years letter, this pioneer game hits the big screen with this adaptation. At CMP, we have been lucky with movies involving pirates (the Corsairs’ movies, ‘Dr. Jones and the Cursed Treasure’, ‘Flashman’s Travels’…) and I expect this one to follow that patern.

Behind The Scenes:
-One of the surprises of this movie was going to be the appearance of Johnny Depp playing a pirate that would be a parody of Jack Sparrow. But Depp rejected the offer. That almost ended up with this project. Finally, after Zach Braff was offered the role and he rejected to replace Depp, Seth Green was chosen to play the parody pirate.
-Mike Newell’s career has always been successful in CMP. He has directed four movies: ‘Alice In Wonderland’, ‘The Hooligan’, ‘The Misadventures Of Harry Flashman’ and ‘The Green Children’. All of them have made net gains and three of them – ‘The Hooligan’ didn’t – have reached the ‘100’ mark.
-Tim Curry is heard in the movie as the voice of a ghost pirate in his return to CMP after being nominated for the Best Supporting Actor GMA for his work in ‘Tales Of The Unexpected’.
-This movie was conceived as the beginning of a franchise. Now, nobody knows if David Makalaster will go on with it in the future.

GET DOWN

Drama / Action

The Cast: Khleo Thomas, Anthony Mackie, Kyla Prat, Terrence Howard, Rob Brown, Cobie Smulders, Mos Def

The Director: Spike Lee
The Screenwriter: Dawson Edwards

The Plot:

Aaron Jr. (K.Thomas) is living in the increasingly dangerous borough of Brownsville New York. His father, Aaron (T.Howard), is a well respected man of crime. If Brownsville had a Mafia, Aaron would be the Underboss. All his young life, Aaron would be told the stories of New York's most notorious gangsters. Being told "Gangter's don't die." From Howard "Pappy" Mason to Nicky Barnes, Aaron Jr. would soak it all up before bed time and watch the modernized version happen by day. He would watch and learn the tricks of hustlin'. Junior's only real connection to a normal life was his best friend Sierra (K.Prat). She was his age but despised the life he dreamed of.

One day, Aaron Jr. met up with two of his father’s hot headed soldiers named "Grand" (A.Mackie) and Rob (R.Brown). Grand told him something his father never would have. He told him that other crews were looking to get rid of his father. Being loyal soldiers, the two decide to take the offensive and handle the problem themselves. A couple days later, Aaron Jr. tells Sierra that his father might be killed without seeing it coming. She tells him to inform her father of Grand's plan to handle things and warn his father. He does, but instead of the generous "Thank You" he was expected, Aaron's father races off to find Grand and stop him before he gets himself killed.

Or Vice-Versa. Junior's father arrives on the other side of town just in time to join the two before they run inside a known stash house. While Aaron talks the two out of it, they are noticed and are immediately shot at. A shootout starts under the street lights. The three are severely out numbered but manage to hold their own for a while. That is until Aaron is shot and killed. Grand and Rob try to take off, Grand screams "GET DOWN!" but Rob is shot in the side with a shotgun.

Grand escapes, and Rob dies on the ride home. He leaves him in the car near the hospital emergency entrance and walks to Aaron's house to deliver the bad news. He does, and while Junior's mom is hysterical and pays him no attention, and he can only think of revenge. He becomes distant from Sierra, he starts hustling under Grand's guidance. Weeks later, Grand is arrested and charged with the murder of 4 men, two of those including Aaron and Rob.

The trial progresses slowly over a couple of month's time. During this time, Junior is making more and more money and becoming exactly what his father was. He finds out that the District Attorney's (C.Smulders) entire case against Grand for the murder of his father is full of lies; lies that he can't possibly prove. Junior finds out where the DA lives, and drunkenly takes it upon himself to enact revenge by killing her. He's standing across the street from her home, pulls out his gun and slowly walks towards her. Before he squeezes the trigger, his hand is grabbed. He turns to find some random man (Mos Def) shaking his head. He tells the man to let go, as tears fall from his face. The man points towards the home, and we see the DA happily hugging her daughter. Junior puts the gun down and leaves, looking back he notices that the man is no longer there, now pondering if he was an angel.

The day before conviction, Junior sits in his home debating whether he even wants to go. He decides to go, and whatever the outcome he'll know that Grand was a gangster and "Gangster's don't die." Before he heads to the courthouse, he stops by Sierra's to apologize. She kisses him, and joins him. They arrive and sit in the back row. Grand walks in the courtroom with this wild look in his eye. He wants to crack a smile when he sees him, but throws up a fist for black power, cause all they wants is his freedom.

In a couple seconds time, he grabbed a court officer's gun and started squeezing. Then he grabbed the judge, screams out -- "Nobody leavin...." And Junior scream "Everybody...GET DOWN!"

The screen fades to black and we hear rapid gun fire, then an old man's words: "if that's how our people gon' get down, how we ever gon' get up?"

Stark’s Comment:
I personally think that this is a wonderful story, following the tradition of Edwards’ tough stories like ‘Fallen Kings’ or ’24 Hours To Live’, both directed too by Spike Lee. Probably, it will have a hard time at box office but it is the kind of movie worth to produce no matter box office’s turnout.

Behind The Scenes:
-This movie had a complex pre-production. Originally, it was going to be starred by Jaden Smith and produced by his father, Will Smith. But finally it was decided that Jaden Smith was a bit too young to play the lead character and he was replaced by the CMP’s debutante Khleo Thomas.
-Once his son was out of the project, Will Smith still considered becoming the director of the movie. But, finally, he decided to leave the project.
-Other directors considered then for the movie were Tony Scott, Wayne Kramer, Steven Soderbergh and Peter Weir. Finally, the chosen one was Spike Lee. It’s the third time that Edwards and Lee work together.
-When Khleo Thomas replaced Jaden Smith, the girl to play Sierra was also changed as a bit older talent was needed: Kyla Prat replaced China Anne McClain.
-The cast includes talents that have worked before with Edwards, Lee or both: Mackie (’24 Hours To Live’), Smulders (‘Wonder Woman’) and Mos Def (‘Fallen Kings’).
-Mos Def looks almost unrecognizable in the movie due to the make-up work to turn him into an old man and angel.

HALLELUJAH: It promises to be one of the most controversial movies coming from CMP in ages. Trent Nielsen and Chad Taylor have co-written this gay love story between a young priest and an atheist young man. Ben McKenzie and Ryan Gosling are going to star this sentimental movie that may be considered pretty scandalous. The project has gone through a turbulent pre-production phase (see more info below at The Inner Circle) before Danny Boyle, who has recently succeeded with ‘The Orphan Train’, finally was confirmed to be the director of the movie.

EARTH 3K2: Josh Collins is putting up together a top notch cast for this sequel being directed by JJ Abrams. Among the big names to be included in the cast, there are some familiar faces in CMP like Jessica Biel and Mickey Rourke, who already worked together in ‘Tracks Of Blood’; Ving Rhames, not seen in CMP since ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’; and no other than Aquaman himself, Paul Walker.

THE ORPHANAGE: James Bradley is going to try a new genre for him. Bradley has written this American remake of one of the best movies made in Spain in recent years. The original movie was produced by Guillermo Del Toro. It tells the highly disturbing story of a woman living in an old orphanage and the strange events that take place after the mysterious disappearance of her adoptive son. Julia Roberts is going to star this suspense and horror remake and M. Night Shymalan is going to direct it. The only previous work of Shymalan for CMP was the acclaimed ‘Cursed Neverland’.

REBEL: Idris Elba joins the cast of this movie about the children soldiers in Africa being directed by Albert and Allen Hughes. Elba’s only previous work in CMP was in another Dawson Edwards’ movie, the brilliant ‘Storm At Home’.

THAT’S THE WAY: Tim Robbins, not seen in CMP since ‘After The Storm’, plays in this Cameron Crowe’s movie the father of the lead star, Cameron Bright. Robbins is having a love affair in the movie with Rachel McAdams, seen past Season in ‘The Beatles’, who plays the wife of Billy Cudrup. Trent Nielsen is the author of the screenplay.

F-ZERO: Terrence Howard, who can be seen this week playing one of the main characters of ‘Get Down’, works with Dawson Edwards again joining the voice only cast of this animated feature. Forest Whitaker, who has been away for a very long time from CMP (his last CMP’s movie was ‘Blink’), will also be heard in this production.

JACK VANCE: A TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY: Matt Kubrick has written this very original story that takes place in a kind of alternative reality. Jack Vance is an upcoming screenwriter in Hollywood that gets caught in the middle of a strange plot where different dimensions mix. Richard Kelly, best known for being the director of ‘Donnie Darko’, makes his debut behind the cameras in CMP with this creative story. And it is going to be starred by another debutante in CMP: the very popular Neil Patrick Harris.

WW3: More debutantes in CMP for this thriller written by Chad Taylor, starred by Harrison Ford and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Alex Pettyfer and Dora Baird join the crowd of young talents to be seen on screen.

SUICIDE SQUAD: Two sexy young stars will also make their debut in CMP in this Uwe Boll’s ultraviolent flick written by Matt Kubrick. Tanya Raymonde plays the missing daughter of Kurt Russell, the man that hires the Suicide Squad to find her. And Olivia Thirlby is going to play Tanya’s friend. Remember that the group of mercenaries known as the Suicide Squad is leaded by Mark Wahlberg and Woody Harrelson.

KINGDOM: THE DARK AND THE LIGHT: AnnaSophia Robb is not returning this week at the Silver Sable franchise playing again Heigl’s niece. But that does not mean that the popular AnnaSophia, seen this Season splashing pies in faces in ‘You Can’t Do That In The Movies’, will have to wait too long to be back to CMP’s world. Next Season, she is joining the cast of this Zack Snyder’s fantasy production.

SILVER SABLE AND THE GENESIS COALITION
By Joey Stark

It was Neil Armstrong or maybe some other legendary astronaut who said: ‘If you have been to the moon, what can you do for the rest of your life?’ Well, I think that’s how Bryan Singer and I felt after ‘Silver Sable and the Wild Pack’. If you have made the most successful movie in CMP’s History, a box office of 352 millions, net gains of 420 millions, what can you do for the rest of your moviemaking career?

After months since the movie was released, Singer, my brother Harry and I have not found yet any specific reason to explain why ‘Silver 2’ – an ordinary superhero movie, after all - became such a huge, spectacular and unexpected success. Moviegoers went crazy with the movie and it became a unique event in the Studio’s history. It was like magic. Something that happens without any specific reason. I wished I could say that we found with ‘Silver 2’ a new formula to make CMP’s movies reach more often the 300 million mark. But the truth is that we didn’t. Maybe we were just lucky.

After ‘Silver 2’, I wondered what could I do next. I had been to the moon! I even considered retiring as screenwriter and becoming just a producer. After all, I had reached the top of the tops and probably I never ever would be able to equal such achievement. But then, I decided to change the perspective. After ‘Silver 2’, I want to focus more in two areas: adult stories and stories only meant to have fun with ignoring financial issues (sorry, Harry). ‘The Impossible Dream’ or ‘Kavalier & Clay’ are examples of what I consider ‘adult stories’. A third instalment of ‘Reform School Girls’ would be what I understand by ‘movies to have fun with’. I am not worrying about box office’s success for a while. Hey, I am the guy that wrote ‘Silver 2’ after all...

But making a third Silver’s movie was almost an obligation. So here we are. ‘Silver Sable and the Genesis Coalition’ opens up this week. And no, none of us – Harry, Bryan, Katherine or me – expect by any mean to repeat the incredible box office of the previous movie. It will be nice enough if we can get close to the 200 million mark.

The plot of this third movie was in my mind since I wrote the first one. I always wanted to give an answer to Silver’s father’s disappearance. So I came up with this idea of turning him the leader of a peculiar organization that works both for the good and for the bad, fighting crime but also committing crimes, something that has finally corrupted him. That’s not in the comics. It’s my own idea. And I like it.

I also wanted to add to the franchise an iconic villain. Dr. Doom, who lives in a neighbour country of Silver’s, looked like a nice choice. And I am so happy having Clive Owen playing the character (sorry, Mr. McMahon). Also, I liked the idea of Silver doing something bad (a robbery) and fighting against the man she was flirting with in ‘Silver 2’ (yes, Spidey). That allowed us to show a darker side of Silver beyond her sexy shining blonde presence.

So here it is. Third Silver’s movie. And last one too? Well, when watching the movie, you will realize that Bryan and I have left it all ready for a fourth one. Foreigner has escaped. Silver has to fix her relationship with Spiderman. Dr. Doom now owns that strange mineral thanks to Silver. Elements enough to build up a fourth movie. But, while making the movie, Bryan and I begun to talk about being this one the last one. Three might be enough. We didn’t change the plot or the ending, but we started working considering it the end of the franchise.

How do I feel about it now, the week we are releasing the movie? Not that sure anymore. Maybe I’ll just let audience decide. If the movie works well enough, I will consider a fourth movie in the future. But, anyway, I would let quite a few Seasons pass before I even start writing it.

Anyway, enjoy the movie without any further consideration ...and avoiding box office’s comparisons afterwards. Silver is sexy and fun. That’s what is all about.

BEST OF… DAVID MAKALASTER

David Makalaster releases this week his latest story, an adaptation of the classic computer game ‘The Secret Of Monkey Island’. A few weeks ago, Makalaster announced his temporary retirement of CMP. And we know what ‘temporary’ has meant for other CMP’s authors that also announced a temporary retirement… So, this week, we take a look at the writing career of a hitmaker also known for being the creator of the wonderful CMMDB remembering the most famous of his 18 movies written for the Studio.

THE GOLDEN DRAGON TRILOGY
‘3s and 7s’ – ‘Drawing Dead’ – ‘Under The Gun’
Quentin Tarantino
Before the acclaimed ‘Legends Of The West’, Tarantino had already decided to take more seriously his works for CMP after peculiar experiences like ‘Wild Cards: Aces High’ or ‘Ace Banner: Return To Fury’. This trilogy about Orlando Bloom and James Gandolfini facing mafia and triad due to a disputed Chinese golden dragon became an audiences and critics’ favorite and one of the highlights in Makalaster’s career.

MAGIC – THE GATHERING
Sinister Black – Innocent White

Martin Campbell
Makalaster had the original idea of turning a popular cards game into a top budget fantasy franchise. The two installments of this saga starred by Jude Law and Claire Danes become big box offices success and an obliged reference for any other ‘fantasy world movie’ made by CMP. Four or five more sequels were planned and we will wait for Makalaster’s return to enjoy them.

DEVIL TRIGGER
The Wachowski Brothers
Without doubt, the most famous Makalaster’s movie. The Wachowski Brothers put up this sophisticated adventure where angels and demons fought to rule the world in a baroque action show. Matt Damon was leading the angels. The movie still is the top 6 box office in CMP’s history (248 millions) and the alltimes top 2 in terms of net gains (382 millions). It got 6 nominations at the Season 10’s GMA and won three of them, including the Best Screenplay GMA for Makalaster himself.

BULLET WITCH
Bullet Witch – Bullet Witch 0

McG - Renny Harlin
Makalaster also adapted the console game Bullet Witch to two shoot’em up action flicks that were mistreated by critics but loved by moviegoers. McG and Renny Harlin directed the movies and Hillary Swank and Erci Bana starred them. ‘Bullet Witch 0’, the prequel to the first movie, made an outstanding box office of 223 million and net gains of 249 millions.

LITTLE TIN GODDESS
David Lynch
Makalaster made his debut in Season 6 with this very original and artsy movie that told the peculiar relationship between a worker (Steve Buscemi) and the statue of a goddess that came to life (Ashanti). The movie flopped at box office, making only 16 millions, but became a cult movie for many critics and fans.

HUMAN AXIS
Christopher Nolan
Many critics consider this sci-fi drama the best Makalaster’s story. Ewan McGregor, Jennifer Connelly and Joseph Fiennes faced the end of mankind in a quality movie that won two GMA: Best Original Concept and Best Supporting Actor (Fiennes) and added another outstanding box office to Makalaster’s career.

ZANN
David Makalaster
The only movie directed by Makalaster himself. A sophisticated horror story adapting a H.P. Lovecraft’s tale. Luke Wilson was abducted by the devil himself, played by Jack Nisholson, in a quality horror movie that audiences did not appreciate, making only a correct box office.

OTHER DAVID MAKALASTER’S STORIES:

THE HOLDERS (Ridley Scott)
THE METAL (Michael Lehman)
TOGETHER APART (Jason Reitman)
ONE MAN’S HELL (Tim Burton)
MALEFICARUM (Sofia Coppola)
HAWKEYE. THE PREY (Louis Leterrier)
THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND: THE THREE TRIALS (Mike Newell)

As it could be expected, the release of ‘Silver Sable and the Genesis Coalition’ has been surrounded by a strong marketing and promotional campaign. Katherine Heigl could be seen in almost any tv show of any nation in the world during this week. As a small example of that wildly intense promotional tour, here we have the sexy Silver presenting the movie at David Letterman’s show.

Is homosexuality still a taboo in Hollywood? I don’t think so. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ helped to open the closest minds about it. But the truth is that CMP is having some problems during the pre-production phase of ‘Hallelujah’, the gay love story co-written by Trent Nielsen and Chad Taylor. Two big names, Russell Crowe and Colin Farrell, have refused to be in the movie. But it seems that the reason is not any kind of homophobic feeling. It’s more an ego issue: both considered that their characters were too minor for them. Also, Danny Boyle doubted before accepting to direct the movie. In his case, the reason was only that he would have preferred to take a rest after ‘The Orphan Train’. But, finally, he decided that the story was interesting enough to go back to work. So no prejudices in CMP about the always controversial issue of gay love stories on screen.

CMP has officially confirmed the cancellation of a pitch that had been sleeping at the waiting list for years now. Its title was ‘Kid Hollywood’ and it was an animated feature written by Matt Kubrick about a young boy becoming a movie industry tycoon. Harry Stark has finally decided not developing it. No specific reason has been given. But I wonder if the flop of ‘The Wind In The Willows’ has discouraged again Stark about animation productions. Let’s hope that ‘F-Zero’ works well enough to revitalize Stark’s faith in animation.

The resurrection of ‘Star Wars’ in CMP is on its way. The pre-production of the new movie of the saga, written by Dawson Edwards, has begun. The only thing known for sure is that George Lucas is in control of his saga again. Lucas will be producing the new episode, as usual. But no director has been chosen yet for it. Remember that Steven Spielberg and Lawrence Kasdan directed the previous CMP’s installments of the franchise, when Marcus Trax was the author of the screenplays. Now, Edwards and Lucas will have to decide who will take the place behind the cameras. No cast members have been made public yet neither. The only thing known is that the storyline will have a slight connection with Trax’s trilogy.

So one franchise resurrects, another one is close to its end. James Bradley has definitely confirmed that there will be only one more movie about the adventures of Harry Flashman. Again, the story will be based on the original George McDonald Fraser’s books with variations created by Bradley. The idea is to reunite in this last Flashy’s adventure some of the most famous characters of the previous movies of the saga. No director has been chosen yet to film this last adventure but CMP’s plan is to release it some time during next Season.

The salaries demanded by the stars keep being a headache for any Studio’s president. Harry Stark decided to respect Kubrick and Tarantino’s wish of having some big names playing minor roles in ‘Legends Of The West’. The problem is that stars like DiCaprio and Stiller demanded their usual salary, no matter they were playing minor roles. Added to that that both Tarantino and Brad Pitt demanded a salary even a bit higher than usual, it all made production costs rise to the stars. The result? The movie has worked very nicely at box office but CMP’s net benefit has been much lower than expected, mainly because most of the money ended up in the pockets of its main talents involved.

And I end up this week with a reflection… If the influence of 500 Days Of Summer could be soon noticed in CMP’s authors (Gordon-Levitt’s sudden stardom in CMP, Marc Webb directing ‘The Bus’, Zooey resurrecting in the Studio with ‘Faded’ and ‘The Bus’…), I wonder what will be the consequences of the big impact that ‘Kick Ass’ has made in CMP’s writers…

DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT

Adventure / Fantasy
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Brendan Fraser, Dakota Fanning, Uma Thurman, Vin Diesel, Tim Roth, Chris Evans, Karl Urban, Jessica Alba, Jason Stathan
Director and Producer: Guillermo Del Toro
Screenwriter: Richard Franzwa

Box Office: 132 mill.
Net Gains: 83 mill.

Stark’s Reaction:
The fantasy genre never disappoints. Maybe, the DVD market has not responded as expected and that, together with the high production budget, has kept us away from higher net gains. But, all in all, a great box office that launches ‘Dragonlance’ as a promising franchise.

LEGENDS OF THE WEST

Action / Western
Cast: Brad Pitt, Lena Heady, Laura Belmont, Ian McShane, John Goodman, Ben Stiller, Leonardo DiCaprio, Amy Adams, Bruce Campbell
Director and Producer: Quentin Tarantino
Screenwriter: Matt Kubrick

Box Office: 91 mill.
Net Gains: 28 mill.

Stark’s Reaction:
Some times, this business is a paradox for a producer. This movie has made a very nice box office but net gains are lower than the ones made by productions that made much lower box offices like ‘Nude!’ or ‘The Orphan Train’, for example. So, yes, public understands this one as a big success (after all, box office is what counts for the public), but at the end, for the Studio, a complex production like this becomes less profitable than easier movies to produce. Anyway, that’s an internal consideration. We spent too much here in paying astronomical salaries to some of the talents involved and that’s the reason for this low net gains. But the movie has officially become a big success and I’m glad for that!

THE BUS

Comedy
Cast: Zach Braff, Zooey Deschanel, Jeff Bridges, Dave Matthews, Cameron Diaz, Kim Basinger, Bill Murray. Cameo by Robert De Niro.
Director: Marc Webb
Producer: Grand Island Movies
Screenwriter: Chad Taylor

Box Office: 39 mill.
Net Gains: 7 mill.

Stark’s Reaction:
It is a real shame that we at CMP always have such a hard time trying to make comedies work in box office. This very funny comedy deserved to have been watched by much wider audiences cause it’s the kind of movie that can please a very wide range of moviegoers. I had a great time watching it and I feel so pleased that we keep avoiding net losses for two consecutive weeks.

DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT

‘Watching this movie, you can easily understand why Guillermo Del Toro has been chosen to direct ‘The Hobbitt’. The influence of ‘The Lords Of The Rings’ is so obvious here. In fact, Del Toro has religiously followed Peter Jackson’s style, creating epic scenarios and copying camera angles from Jackson’s trilogy. Del Toro is a more creative and daring moviemaker than what he shows in this movie. Maybe, he has felt pressured for the huge amount of money that CMP has invested in this movie or he was just trying to attract the widest audience possible. But the truth is that he has stayed too loyal to the rules of any epic adventure movie not daring to take too many creative risks. The result is what it has to be: a big, very big production, and a perfect show for fans of fantasy. But I expected a bit more visual creativity from Del Toro.’
-Vic Carter

‘The formula? ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ + ‘Magic-The Gathering’. We have seen this movie before in CMP, haven’t we? I might mention here too the references to ‘The Land Of Nod’ or even ‘The Fantastic Mansion’. Maybe it’s my problem but I just cannot get into this kind of movies anymore. My brain just cannot cope with more fantasy plots, creatures, devilish villains, myths, races, magic devices and imaginary worlds… I have had enough…. probably, for the rest of my life. So yes, ‘Dragonlance’ is a wonderful visual show and a perfect movie for fans of fantasy. Enjoy it. But don’t count on me for the ride.’
-Jackie O’Callaghan

‘Del Toro shows us again all his visual strength as moviemaker in this luxurious fantasy adventure. It’s good news that Del Toro leaves more alternative, underground or elitist productions to get finally involved in a major Hollywood production as he is probably one of the most visionary moviemakers of these days. ‘Dragonlance’ is the perfect material for him to spread all his skills at directing action sequences, building up the most peculiar characters and making fantasy believable. Maybe, the director of ‘Hellboy’ – my favorite movie from him – is becoming more ‘mainstream’, but he still keeps his talent to put up the most visually seductive sequences and to manage comfortably in any kind of fantasy story.’
-Roy Winslow

LEGENDS OF THE WEST

‘Undoubtedly, this is the most tarantino-esque movie of all the movies that Tarantino has made for CMP. ‘Legends Of The West’ connects directly with movies like ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Inglorious Bastards’. Probably, none of these movies are as good as his first works, like ‘Reservoir Dogs’ or ‘Pulp Fiction’, but they are wonderful updates of classic genres – karate movies, war, western – adapted to his own concepts and artistic obsessions. A Tarantino movie is always made more of the sum of brilliant individual sequences than of a fluent plot. He is more a ‘creator of situations’ than a ‘storyteller’. And you can notice that in ‘Legends Of The West’ too, where single sequences leaves a bigger impression in moviegoers than the movie as a whole. Anyway, here is a wildly entertaining movie to watch without prejudices, enjoying it more as blood splashes the screen and bullets enters into everyone’s chest.’
-Charlie Kiggs

‘The best CMP’s Tarantino movie so far. The first Tarantino’s movies for CMP – ‘Wild Cards 2’, ‘Ace Banner 3’ - were just a kind of joke from a capricious genius. The Golden Dragon trilogy was a very entertaining series but I had the feeling that Tarantino was too content in them, not letting run free his usual visual and plots style. Now that Tarantino has changed the search for a Golden Dragon for the search for a Golden Cross, ‘Legends Of The West’ finally is the big and great Tarantino’s movie for CMP we have been waiting for years. Irregular, inconsistent and faulty, as all Tarantino’s movies are, ‘Legends Of The West’ has the best and the worst of this controversial moviemaker but, mainly, it has everything that his millions of fans want from him. And part of that credit has to be taken by Matt Kubrick. Kubrick has perfectly adapted to Tarantino’s style writing this movie. In fact, the structure, characters and plots and subplots of the movie could have been perfectly written by Tarantino himself because they all respond and fit like a glove with his peculiar style. Kubrick has definitely transformed in Tarantino when writing this great screenplay that will be remembered as one of his best writing works.’
-Anne Roman

‘Tarantino’s movies always include some cast surprises. In this one, he has put together again big names with lower ranked stars and forgotten talents and the mixture works as well as usual. Pitt feels so comfortable playing Tarantino’s excessive characters. Stiller and DiCaprio have the chance to do something absolutely different from what they usually do. Ian McShane builds up one of the greatest characters of the movie. The two girls – Heady and Belmont – look as wild, sexy and dangerous as they are meant to be. And John Goodman has the time of his life creating his nasty character. Casts are always one of the main appeals of Tarantino’s movies and that’s the case too this time. An unexpected mixture of names that works as precisely as the most sophisticated clock.’
-Jake Cobb

THE BUS

‘Intelligent, absurd, surreal… and extremely hilarious. ‘The Bus’ is the second nice surprise at the comedy genre of this CMP’s Season after ‘Nude!’. Marc Webb has made a movie that in fact is a succession of sketches - sometimes close to slapstick, sometimes based on an absurd style of humor, sometimes putting the accent on the most ingenious dialogues - that match at the end like pieces of a puzzle to create one of the funniest comedies of recent times. Chad Taylor is redeemed for comedy after the disappointment of ‘Crime Stoppers’ with this fresh, imaginative and original screenplay that opens new fields for contemporary comedy.’
-Anne Roman

‘Zach Braff has the privilege of having been the lead star of what probably are the three best CMP’s comedies: ‘Schroedinger’s Litterbox’, ‘Mary’s Dark Side’ and ‘The Bus’. Of course, as any star, he has also made wrong choices (‘Don’t Stand So Close To Me’, ‘Crime Stoppers’). But, when given the right material to him, Braff proves he is much more than just the funny guy from ‘Scrubs’. He is a talented comedy actor that knows when he has to act in a subtle and content or in a goofy and silly way. That’s the main appeal of him. He is not one of those comedians that always do the same, no matter the movie or the character. He is a versatile talent that perfectly understands what the character, the plot and the movie demands from him. ‘The Bus’ is another proof of the many acting shades Braff has and a perfect vehicle for him to shine (and please, don’t miss the sequence of Braff with the dead dog and the family: one of the most hilarious moments in all CMP’s History!).’
-Lilly Stevens

‘Big stars love to play little roles when they find something different in them from what they are usually offered. I can understand why people like Bridges, De Niro, Diaz, Basinger or Murray accepted to be in this movie. Webb and Taylor have offered all of them eccentric characters where they could show her comedy skills at their best. All of them are so funny in the movie, but I have to remark here the work of Bill Murray and De Niro (his private joke about ‘Taxi Driver’ is a don’t miss!). They have all been part of the movie without pretending to steal the show. That’s the best of their works. And you just feel great when such bunch of talented people makes you burst out laughing the way they do in this great comedy.’
-Tim Reeve

DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT

OPENING STATEMENT: When these kinds of films come out, some moviegoers may groan: 'ugh, not another one' and lately many recent fantasy films haven't quite lived up to the standards of Lord of the Rings. Though many CMP films have been able to do fantasy right, and this is no exception. I like to see CMP writers dive into waters they haven't fully stepped into, so I admire Richard Franzwa for showing off his versatility.

BEST OF IT: In a fantasy movie, you hope to see something great with special effects. I loved them, along with the acting, writing and the great scenery.

WORST OF IT: My biased dislike of Jessica Alba. How did she get that role.

SHINING STAR/DEAD WEIGHT: This is one of the films in which just about everyone on the cast stood out as performing well enough to shine, much like LOTR. Dead Weight in my opinion though, as previously mentioned: Jessica Alba.

THE BRAINS BEHIND: If you want an awesome looking design for your film, Del Toro is a guy to look for. His style of art direction and special effects worked well. Richard Franzwa wrote a correct fantasy film that stands out better than many of the recent fantasy movies that Hollywood has done.

IN CONCLUSION: A have a fun time at the cinemas with this one. Once again, for the second week in a row, we have a movie that fits well with the 'summer season blockbuster' mold.

LEGENDS OF THE WEST

OPENING STATEMENT: I like when a CMP writer follows the style of a director closely and writes the film with that director in mind, thinking how the director would make the film. Matt studied Quentin's films closely and a lot of his films are done in the same style. We knew it was going to happen sometime: Quentin taking what he did with Inglorious Basterds and making it a western.

BEST OF IT: An all around well made production. Direction, performances, acting, sets, music, just a great movie to watch with Tarantino's signature touch.

WORST OF IT: Some moviegoers who don't get Quentin's style will find it pretentious, long, and too much going on. Others are the old people who don't put much thought into the movie they go to see, then complain that it's not their cute fluffy bunny movie they were somehow hoping for.

SHINING STAR/DEAD WEIGHT: Quentin can really get the best out of his cast, even if you don't agree with the choices. Who would have thought Stiller would have been likable in this movie? No real dead weight, everyone in the cast had something to bring to the table.

THE BRAINS BEHIND: Another Tarantino/Kubrick classic. A perfectly balanced film and I like that Kubrick wrote it the way Quentin would have.

IN CONCLUSION: A another fun time at the movies. Something that might be a big GMA contender.

THE BUS

OPENING STATEMENT: The concept of The Bus is something rarely seen in the movies. Taking place primarily on the bus and the funny characters and situations that happen to come across the main character. It's funny and has a rather indie-spirit to it that will feed those hungry for movies that aren't mainstream.

BEST OF IT: The originality is definitely a high point in the film. Moviegoers complain about how nothing is ever new or original, well here's something that's not overdone. It's funny but with sophistication. If you live in a big city, a bus or subway ride is not so far off from the truth in this film. Excellent work, Chad.

WORST OF IT:
Nothing that I think is worst of it. It's a film that's hard to hate.

SHINING STAR/DEAD WEIGHT: Zach being our main character manages to also stand out as being the shining star, but it's also the cast of zany characters that he happens to witness that are also worth mentioning as being highly important. A film where these big stars and GMA winners don't care if they only get 5 minutes on screen, they take that 5 minutes and turn it into gold.

THE BRAINS BEHIND: I applaud Chad's film and wish there were more films like it. Marc Webb gets special mentioning of giving us his point of view and having some interesting shots as well. It reminded me of another semingly retired writer: Ben Tyler with his debut film 'SCHROEDINGER’S LITTERBOX' just with the sophisticated comedy and Zach Braff. I also thank Grand Island for producing the film, stepping out of their usually dramatic productions and looking for the indie-spirit comedies.

IN CONCLUSION: A might be overshadowed by the popular Tarantino movie and the big budget blockbuster fantasy movie, but if you do decide to check it out, it's worth it.

MR. THUMBS' CERTIFIED MUST SEE OF THE WEEK:

no surprises this week:

SEE ALL THREE!

DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT

Adventure / Fantasy

The Cast: Ewan McGregor, Brendan Fraser, Dakota Fanning, Uma Thurman, Vin Diesel, Tim Roth, Chris Evans, Karl Urban, Jessica Alba, Jason Stathan

The Director and Producer: Guillermo Del Toro
The Screenwriter: Richard Franzwa

The Plot:

A group of friends who separated five years ago on indiviual quests to find evidence of the true gods return to their home in Solace. However, they find that the peaceful village is now under the control of the Highseekers of Haven, an agnostic order that sprung up after the Cataclysm when the true gods abandoned the world of Kyrnn. The Seekers, however, are no longer benign and fanatical elements have gained control of the order. Solace is now an armed camp patrolled by goblins searching for the holder of a blue crystal staff.

Tanis (Ewan McGregor), Flint (Brendan Fraser) and Tasslehoff (Dakota Fanning) meet outside of town. After a brief confrontation with a goblin patrol, they continue to the Inn Of The Last Home and meet with the rest of their friends. Twin brothers Caramon (Vin Diesel) Raistlin (Tim Roth) and Sturm (Chris Evans). Sitting with them are Goldmoon (Uma Thurman) and Riverwind (Karl Urban) two barbarians they befriended on the road. Goldmoon bares the blue crystal staff an artifact of the true gods which possesses the power of healing. The Companions are forced to flee Solace after Goldmoon uses the staff to heal a Highseeker which results in a bar fight.

In an attempt to flee, they cross a lake to avoid their pursuers and Raistlin notices that the constellations known as The Valiant Warrior and The Queen of Darkness, representing Paladine the god of good and Takhisis the god of evil, are absent from the sky. He claims it means that the two gods have returned to Kyrnn. The next day the group is attacked by Draconians, foot soldiers of the Dark Queens army. Fleeing into the woods, the Companions soon find themselves in a place known as Darken Wood where they are attacked by ghostly warriors but are rescued by Centaurs and taken to the Forrest Master, a unicorn. The Forrest Master tells them to take the staff to Xak Tsaroth and retrieve the Disks of Mishakal which contain the teachings of the true gods.

After a lengthy trip and several encounters with the forces of darkness, the Compainions enter Xak Tsaroth. There they have a battle with the dragon Khisanth who is finally defeated using the power of the crystal staff which seems to kill Goldmoon as well. However, they find her later resting at the foot of the statue of Mishakal who has blessed Goldmoon with true clerical powers. The compainions leave Xak Tsaroth with the Disks of Mishakal and head back to Solace only to find it overrun with draconians. The group is captured after a brief battle. They are chained together and put in cages bound for Pax Tharkas a fortress where they will be forced to work in the mines.

En route to Pax Tharkas, they are rescued by elves, and taken to the elven city of Qualinesti. Once in Qualinesti, Tanis is reunited with his childhood sweetheart Laurana (Jessica Alba). She still has a crush on Tanis and expects him to marry her. Tanis breaks her heart by telling her that he is in love with someone else and that she is still a child. There they have an audience with the Speaker of the Suns, the leader of the elves where it is decided the Companions will lead an attack on Pax Tharkas and free the slaves to break the Dragon Highlord Verminaard's (Jason Statham) hold there.

They journey to Pax Tharkas using a secret underground passage and devise a plan to free the slaves. Tanis become outraged when they discover that Laurana has followed them and he rebukes her by telling her to stop acting like a spoiled child. Laurana resolves to prove her worth to Tanis and the Companions.

In the slave quarters Goldmoon heals Elistan, a dying Seeker, and converts him to the faith of the true gods. He becomes the first cleric of Paladine and eventually will become the leader of Paladines church on Kyrnn. The Companions help the slaves escape, but Verminaard and his dragon Ember arrive to crush the revolt. When Ember threatens the slaves children a second dragon, Flamestrike, comes to their defense believing them to be her own lost children. While both dragons fight to the death, Tanis and Sturm, with the help of Laurana, kill Verminaard.

With the slaves from Pax Tharkas liberated and the dragon armies on their heals, the Companions are now on on the run looking for a place where they and the slaves will be safe.

Stark’s Comments:
A big, very big production in all senses. Without doubt, the most ambitious project in Franzwa’s career. One of those releases that has it all to become a blockbuster. Fantasy worlds always generate nice profits and I don’t expect this one to be the exception to that rule.

Behind The Scenes:
-Franzwa wanted Jude Law to star this movie but the Studio rejected him. The reason was that Law is already the lead star of another similar fantasy franchise: ‘Magic – The Gathering’.
-Not too late after the rejection of Jude Law, Makalaster announced his retirement so now ‘Magic-The Gathering’ goes on hiatus and Law could have starred this one.
-The character of Sturm was offered to Christian Bale. When he declined the offer, it was offered to Hugh Jackman. And when Hackman refused to play it, Chris Evans got into the project.
-Flint was offered to Ron Perlman. As Perlman was shooting ‘Game Boy 3’, Brendan Fraser replaced him.
-The movie was going to be directed and produced by Bryan Singer. Singer had shown his interest in doing it. But when the shooting dates were scheduled at the same time that ‘Silver Sable and the Genesis Coalition’, Bryan had to abandon the project and Guillermo Del Toro replaced him both as director and producer.
-Before this one, Del Toro had only directed sequels of pre-existing franchises in CMP (Wild Cards and Preacher). This is the first time that he directs a brand new material.
-As soon as this shootage finished, Jason Statham joined the cast of the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’.
-The movie is based on the book by Margaret Wise and Tracy Hickman.

LEGENDS OF THE WEST

Action / Western

The Cast:
Brad Pitt, Lena Heady, Laura Belmont, Ian McShane, John Goodman, Ben Stiller, Leonardo DiCaprio, Amy Adams, Bruce Campbell

The Director and Producer: Quentin Tarantino

But she has higher dreams one day she will be rid of this place and she will never have to lay on her back to make money every again. It is the 1870s the camera shows people riding horses and people doing things out in the muddy streets. The chapter is mostly about Selma's day to day life and how she interacts with her fellow prostitutes. She is a beautiful woman sometimes nice but sometimes mean. She hates her boss with a passion but is quick to conceal it until the right time so she can bide her time. She is kind of the leader of the prostitutes herself and they all look up to her. Pennington also has his trouble with the local Sheriff named Hale (B.Campbell). They have been having a long running feud over all the dirty dealings Pennington has done but has nothing could ever be proven. He is here because a poker game ending up in stabbing and he is trying to figure out what is going on. Finally he takes the man responsible for the murder away and points his finger at Pennington and winks at him as if to say see you soon.

Chapter 2

We focus in on a train inside an officer Named Merrick (I.McShane) is talking to his band of troops a 12 man unit, he is reading a letter, it talks about a hidden treasure and with it is a map. When asked about how he got it he tells them a story. We flashback to Merrick talking to a sarcastic jokey man named Vince (B.Stiller) who wants a thousand gold pieces for the map and letter. Merrick kills him with a knife and takes what he wants. Merrick plans to take his unit to the gold so they can split it amongst themselves. Meanwhile a con man by the name of Doyle (B.Pitt) is overhearing the whole thing. Not only is he smart but he is a quick draw and quite dangerous. He secretly steals the map, makes a copy of it and puts it back where it belongs before anyone notices. He knows the area better than anyone else. He gets off the next stop and takes a quick ride to a small town called Stillwater. He goes into a saloon where he makes conversation with the scumbag foulmouthed owner Pennington. Doyle is looking for his girlfriend called Flower (L.Heady) and learns she will be by later. Meanwhile Merrick and his troops have set up camp, they plan on making their way to the hidden spot as soon as they can but even though they have a map it will still be hard to find, they need a certain gold cross with holes drilled into it so they can place it in the spot so light can shine through and point to the right spot. They still have to find the owner of the cross. Back at the saloon Flower has shown up and she slaps Doyle and wants to know what he is doing back after all these years. In a hushed voice he tells her all about the gold treasure which could make them both very rich. Doyle tells her the only problem and shows her the map and the picture of the strange cross which he knows nothing about. Flower tells her she does and will take him to it. Pennington thinks that something is up and he tells his son Conner (L.DiCaprio) to follow them and keep tabs on what they are doing.

Doyle and Flower ride out to a place where an old man lives who lives a mile outside of town. But they have arrived too late. Merrick and his troops have somehow learned about the the cross. The place is in flames and the dead bodies lay scattered around. Conner catches up with them with his gun drawn and says they have to come back to his father’s saloon or he will kill them both. Doyle jokes about Conner being a lackey and a pussy, too scared to talk back to his old man. They reluctantly go back with him. When they arrive at the saloon Pennington has just gotten finished getting a blowjob from Selma, she goes running off. Pennington whistles and a group of people appear from multiple rooms from above pointing firearms. Doyle is forced to give up the information on the treasure and the troops. Both sides agree to team up to take the gold and split it up. Late that night Doyle and Flower have a night of hard sex in one of the saloon rooms.

Chapter 3

There is a lengthy flashback taking place 10 years earlier detailing how Doyle and Flower met. They originally met in New York they were drifters pulling small time work and pulling small time crimes to make money and scamming rich people. They became lovers. They decided to move out west and they decided to pull a major heist. They robbed a train car together with the help of a third man but he was killed during the heist. They eventually made off with the money but later that night Doyle left Flower with little money in a hotel room. She woke up and he was gone. This sequence lasts 20 minutes..

Chapter 4

Early in the morning Doyle, Flower and Pennington's men ride out to the spot where the map is marked to wait for the troops. Finally they see them and ambush the troops which leads to an extended fire fight filled with slow motion deaths, shots of bullets wizzing through the air and sprays of blood when someone is struck in the neck. In the end though all of Merrick's men are dead and Doyle puts a bullet through his head. The group uses the cross to lead them to the treasure. But when they return to the saloon with the gold Pennington betrays them. Doyle and flower are forced to leave empty handed.

Doyle and Flower make plans to storm the saloon themselves but run into trouble with the local sheriff named Hale. He persuaded to help them out with the promise of some of the gold. He says he can have some of his men help them out and some of the gold can be helped to boost the local economy. Hale tells his wife Jennifer (A.Adams) that he wants her to stay inside because things are going to turn ugly. He is going to take down Merrick who has been a problem for the town since the very beginning.

That night the final act begins as the saloon is stormed and a blood bath erupts. Bullets, splintering wood, tables upturned, bodies riddled with bullets. Hale and Conner are killed. Pennington is holed up behind his counter. He quickly goes running upstairs before he can be shot but he is stabbed dead by Selma when she bursts from out of a room suddenly and he falls over a bannister and falls to the ground below smashing a table. Doyle and Flower go into the room where the gold is being kept and Flower betrays Doyle and shoots him and says sorry but I really need this gold and kisses him. While he is laying bleeding to death on the floor, Doyle shoots Flower which hits her in the neck. She holds her hand to her neck trying to stop the blood and sits against a wall. Selma walks downstairs shocked by the carnage. She goes into the room and finds both Doyle and Flower dead and she also finds the chest filled with gold and smiles to herself.

The end

Stark’s Comment:
In ‘Inglorious Bastards’, Tarantino adapted the clichés of old war movies to his own style. Now he has done the same with western. His fans are going to love this one. I expect a nice box office.

Behind The Scenes:
-The first title of this movie was ‘Way Of The Gun’. When Matt Kubrick realized it was too similar to another CMP’s Tarantino’s movie, ‘Under The Gun’, he decided to change it for ‘Legends Of The West’.
-Kubrick and Tarantino have met before as director or producer in other four CMP’s productions: ‘Wild Cards 2: Aces High’, ‘Ace Banner: Return To Fury’, ‘Reform School Girls’ and ‘Tracks Of Blood’.
-DiCaprio and Stiller have given the same reason to accept a minor role in this movie: ‘I love Tarantino and I wanted to work with him, no matter the importance of the role’.
-DiCaprio has starred this Season ‘Conspiracy Of Life’ and Stiller has starred ‘Coen & Warshinski’.
-Ben Stiller and Amy Adams meet again in a CMP’s movie after ‘Woodland Creatures’ and ‘Being Ben Stiller’.
-Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Goodman and Amy Adams are all GMA Winners.
-Ian McShane has worked before in another Kubrick’s story: the remake of ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’.

THE BUS

Comedy

The Cast: Zach Braff, Zooey Deschanel, Jeff Bridges, Dave Matthews, Cameron Diaz, Kim Basinger, Bill Murray. Cameo by Robert De Niro.

The Director: Marc Webb
The Screenwriter: Chad Taylor
The Producer: Grand Island Movies

The Plot:

We follow a day in the life of Barry (Zach Braff). He is an artist/actor who is low on cash. He can't afford a car and hasn't learned how to ride a bike, so he takes the city bus everywhere he goes. It is November 26, 2009, Thanksgiving Day. Barry leaves his house in the afternoon and plans to go to the supermarket to get some Thanksgiving turkey. He is set to have his mom, dad, sister and two brothers over later for dinner.

He gets on the bus and meets Bill (Jeff Bridges). They carry a conversation until a speeding red convertible pulls up beside the bus. In it is a blonde woman, honking her horn loudly. Bill tells Barry that it's his wife (Kim Basinger), who had just caught him cheating on her an hour ago. Not sure how to get out without confronting her, they pull down on the chord and the bus comes to rest at the next stop, as does the convertible. Bill tells Barry to go out first and distract her, which he refuses at first, then agrees to do. He stands in front of her car and starts to talk to her frantically as Bill quickly exits and starts to run down the street. However she sees him in the corner of her eye and steps on the gas, hitting Barry, sending him rolling across the hood, windshield and then into the passenger's seat. He screams out a girlish yell as they speed onto towards the back of Bill. He swings open his door, and nervously jumps out. As he lays on the road, he looks up and sees Bill being chased by his wife’s car on down the street. He walks down to the bus stop and prepares for the next bus to come.

He gets on this one, again waiting to go to the supermarket. He sits on the 20-minute ride and when he gets to the supermarket, he sees that is closed down. Everyone on the bus gets mad when they find out the reason it is closed is because it is infested with ducks. He gets angry and starts to mumble about needing a turkey, until the couple beside him tells him that they have an extra turkey at their house and can come over. So he goes to Jeff (Dave Matthews) and Amy (Cameron Diaz)'s nice, expensive house. He walks in, and there are kids running around everywhere. Amy tells him he can sit down on the couch and watch tv and asks if he is hungry, which he replies yes. 10 minutes later she walks in and finds him watching The Chappelle Show on Comedy Central. She is disgusted, telling him that are kids around and that is largely inappropriate. He feels awkward and changes the channel to some kids channel. In Amy's hands is a tray with a plate of food on it. A ham sandwich. Green Beans. Two Hersheys chocolate bars. Barry is allergic to chocolate so he sticks it on the ground for the dog to eat. He finishes the meal and thanks the couple for the meal. They then hand him the turkey and he is about to leave until the dog starts to twitch and squeal and falls over. Jeff panics and gets on his knees, touches the dog, then looks up to Barry, Amy, and the kids and says its dead. The kids start cry and Amy starts asking why. Then one of the kids says he saw the dog eating chocolate. Everyone stares at Barry who stiffens up. He then opens the door and starts sprinting down the sidewalk, with everyone in that household wanting to kill him.

The next stop is only a few blocks away, so Barry runs all the way there. When he gets to the stop, there is a Catholic priest (Bill Murray) waiting on the bench. He takes a seat next to him, although a bit awkward because he himself is Jewish. "Hi, I'm Father Jason. Do you like children?" the priest asks. All of the Priest-little boy stereotypes Barry has heard, runs through his mind before he can answer when finally he just says "What?"The priest explains to him that he must go pick up a school bus, then pick up a group of students from a Catholic school, from their field trip, and he needs someone to watch over them while he drives. Barry tells him about how he is trying to get a turkey, and has to make it home, and the priest replies by telling him it won't take long. Barry, being the gullible guy he is, accepts the offer, after he thinks of how all little Catholic school kids are perfect. They board the bus, and meet an angry bus driver, Arnie (Robert DeNiro). "2 dollars!" he shouts. "Excuse me? I think you mean 75 cents." Barry replies. "Nope! 2 dollars!" He has a mean, greedy grin on his face, until the priest pushes forward, grabs onto the driver's collar, and yells "NO DAMN IT, IT's 75 CENTS!" Barry seems shocked, as the priest throws his three quarters in. He slowly follows and puts his money in, and takes a seat a few feet away from the priest. "WHAT?!? Am I too loud? Are you embarrassed to sit by me? Fine, I don't need you!" Fr. Jason yells. "Um,sir..."Arnie starts. "IT'S FATHER TO YOU!"the priest says back."Father...I'm gonna ask you to leave the bus." Minutes later, Barry sits alone in his seat. He thinks about the last few events, and starts liking the priest's rebellious attitude. "HEY BUS DRIVER! SCREW YOU! YOU TRIED TO SCAM ME!" he yells. Arnie seems confused. "Hey man, calm down, that was a while a go!" Barry gets out of his seat and stands up next to the driver "You're so mean." He slaps the driver in the face. Seconds pass, as the bus driver's cheek slowly turns red, and his head slowly turns towards Barry. Arnie, a muscular man, does not look happy, and his foot stomps on the break. "Who do you think I am? Do I look like a taxi driver to you? I'm a bus driver. And we don't back down." Barry starts to get scared, as his face again turns toward a frightened side. The door behind him opens, and he quickly rushes off of the bus.

He then boards the next bus. Beat-down, stressed, and confused, Barry stares out the window at the buildings passing by. He then hears a voice ask Can I sit hear?. He turns around and finds a beautiful girl standing next to the seat, holding books in hand and wearing a huge smile. Their eyes meet and it is love at first sight. He answers yes and she sits down beside him asking if everything is alright. He then tells her what has happened today. The bus suddenly starts to make odd noises and stops. Everyone starts complaining as the bus driver explains that the bus broke down. It is six miles to Barry’s house, but still he comes to the conclusion that he must walk. The girl, Chandra (Zooey Deschandel), tells him that she will walk with him. And so Barry and Chandra set off on a 6-mile walk home, with Barry holding a turkey in his arms, both sharing stories and such. About half-way there, they come to a bus stop, where the bus will be stopping soon. So they wait a few minutes, and the bus pulls up. They both jump in joy and start to board the bus, until they see the driver. It's Arnie."No thanks, YOU can't ride my bus. She can, YOU can't." Chandra seems confused, and Barry furious. She is already on the steps, but he is on the outside. Then the doors start to shut, with her on board. She looks at Barry, scared and in need of help, as the bus starts to drive away. He drops the turkey and chases after the bus. He quickly runs it down and starts hitting on the door. The door opens, knocking Barry back, and continues going. "All-American sprinter!"Barry yells."All-American bus driver!" Arnie replies, and he steps on the pedal, speeding forward. Barry is gassed, and slowly comes to a stop looking sad. The bus then stops, and Chandra steps out. "I took care of him" she says, smiling. They walk all the way back and pick up the turkey and then start to head back to his house. When they finally get there, tired and wore down, he finds his family waiting for him. He apologizes, but then finds out they already cooked a turkey and the food is ready. He invites Chandra to dinner and she accepts. And so Barry is now ready for Thanksgiving Dinner, with his family and Chandra, after a day of Public Transportation.

Stark’s Comment:
I love these comedies with a surreal sense of humor. I am not completely sure if it will work in box office, but I feel proud of this one. Intelligent comedy at its best. Crossed fingers for this one.

Behind The Scenes:
-Zach Braff has worked in a Chad Taylor’s story before: he played a minor character in ‘Crime Stoppers’.
-Cameron Diaz has been seen this Season in ‘Ms. Jordon’.
-Robert De Niro has already made a cameo this Season in ‘The Forgotten’.
-Since he won two GMA for ‘Life And Facts Of A Dirty Mind’, Bill Murray has only been making voice only works or playing minor roles and making cameos in movies like ‘Command & Conquer’, ‘Borgel’ or ‘Yogi Bear’.
-Bill Murray and Robert De Niro met before in CMP in ‘Life And Facts Of A Dirty Mind’, directed by Murray himself.
-This movie means Jeff Bridges’ return to CMP after winning the Best Actor GMA for ‘The Rock Star’.
-Marc Webb and Zooey Deschanel worked together in ‘500 Days Of Summer’.

KINGDOM: THE DARK AND THE LIGHT: Zack Snyder faced his most ambitious production in CMP back in Season 11 with ‘Kingdom’, another ‘fantasy world’ adventure, written by Matt Kubrick. This production didn’t make it as expected in box office: 55 millions was a pretty low turnout for a top budget movie like this. Now, in Season 14, Snyder and Kubrick will try luck again with a sequel, trying to relaunch this saga. Megan Fox and Chris Evans, who can be seen in this week’s release ‘Dragonlance’, will be again the starring couple.

REBEL: Here is a different kind of movie. Dawson Edwards has written a social denounce drama about the children that are turned into soldiers at an extremely young age in many African countries. To tell this tough and heart-breaking story, Edwards has chosen the Hughes Brothers, Albert and Allen, to direct it, in what will be their CMP’s debut. Jaden Smith (seen before in lighter CMP’s movies like ‘Woodland Creatures’ or ‘Yogi Bear’) will star the movie while Djimon Hounsou (‘The Secret People’, ‘Goldmine Killers’, ‘West Flashman’) will play the cruel villain of the story. A very interesting pitch.

EARTH 3K2: Also in Season 11, Josh Collins wrote and JJ Abrams directed this action sci-fi flick that also stayed below expectations. This one did a bit better than ‘Kingdom’ (93 millions in box office) although also aspired to be a major blockbuster. The movie ended with a cliffhanger: Ewan McGregor and Jennifer Garner were killed and their only son survived but was kept by the villain, Javier Bardem. This sequel will tell the story of that kid, now played by Shia LaBeouf, who finally returns to CMP after many Seasons away and many offers rejected. To help him in his adventure, he will have the support of a CMP’s debutante, Scout Taylor-Compton. JJ Abrams is directing the sequel too.

WW3:
The list of young talents in the cast of this movie starred by Harrison Ford never seems to end. More names to add to it this week: Amber Heard (replacing Megan Fox, who refused the offer to be in the movie, as she didn’t consider the character important enough for her), Lou Taylor Pucci (‘Blood Beach’) and Sara Paxton, seen before in the Kubrick’s Syndrom franchise.

GET DOWN: As it was written before, Jaden Smith, now starring ‘Rebel’, was considered too young to play the main character of this peculiar gansters story written by Dawson Edwards and directed by Spike Lee. The teen talent chosen to replace him is Khleo Thomas who has a crush in the movie with Kyla Prat, both debutantes in CMP. Khleo’s father will be played by Terrence Howard, only seen before in CMP in ‘A Man Called Dan’. Rob Brown, who played Jimi Hendrix in ‘Haight-Ashbury’, will also show up in this movie.

SILVER SABLE AND THE GENESIS COALITION: Silver’s family will also return in this third installment of the franchise. Bob Hoskins repeats as her mentor, Uncle Morty. Hoskins played the character before in ‘Silver Sable and the Wild Pack’, replacing Anthony Hopkins, who played it in the original ‘Silver Sable’. Hoskins also made a parody of the character in ‘The Revengers’. Sam Elliott will play again Silver’s father, as he did in the original ‘Silver Sable’. The only family member not to be seen in this one will be Anna SophiaRobb, who played Silver’s niece in the two previous movies.

F-ZERO: The animated version of this Nintendo game written by Dawson Edwards and directed by Karym Kusama increases its cast of voice only talents with Famke Janssen, who had not work in CMP since Danny Boyle’s ‘The Running Man’, and John Malkovich, returning to CMP after an absence of 10 Seasons. His last work for the Studio was back in Season 3, when he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor GMA thanks to ‘The Toymaker’.

THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND: THE THREE TRIALS: During its pre-production phase, this movie suffered one of the biggest disappointments imaginable. The main appeal of ths David Makalaster’s pirates comedy was the presence in it of Johnny Depp playing a pirate that would be a parody of Jack Sparrow. When Depp rejected to play this parody of his already parodic character, it was so disappointing for everyone involved in this production that it was almost cancelled. Finally, director Mike Newell decided to go on, no matter the absence of Depp in the movie. Still, the Jack Sparrow parodic pirate stays in the movie. But now it will be played by Seth Green, seen in other CMP’s movies like ‘Schroedinger’s Litterbox’ or ‘Storm At Home’.

SUICIDE SQUAD: Kurt Russell stays loyal to his good friend Matt Kubrick. He will be in this Uwe Boll’s movie too and that will mean the 9th time that Russell works in a Kubrick’s story. That way, Russell and Kubrick become by far the most stable and lasting collaborators in CMP’s world. Kubrick and Russell have met before in movies like the Avengers franchise, the Syndrome trilogy, ‘Nick Fury’, ‘Shotgun Joe’ and ‘Ace Banner: Return To Fury’. Also in the movie, two CMP’s debutantes: Dash Mihok and Adewale Akinnuoye.

THAT’S THE WAY: This soft family drama written by Trent Nielsen will tell the story of the peculiar relationship that grows between a teenager and the husband of his father’s lover. To play this characters, Nielsen and director Cameron Crowe will count with Cameron Bright, last time seen in CMP in the acclaimed ‘Teenage Wasteland’, and Billy Cudrup, in his first work for the Studio.

RICHARD FRANZWA
DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT

Richard Franzwa releases this week what, without doubt, is his most ambitious project ever. The author of successful movies like ‘A Hard Place’, ‘The Awful Truth’, ‘The Manor’, ‘The Sonja Blue Chronicles’ or the Fallout series, has adapted the Dragonlance novels to create a new fantasy world in CMP. Although not very active, Franzwa has been part of CMP almost since its very beginning and his movies have usually been strongly supported mainly by critics. This one might become his first big blockbuster.

1.In your opinion, what's the difference between 'Dragonlance' and other movies about fantasy worlds?

One of the big differences is the size of the cast. In fact, when I submitted my original screenplay I had cast thirteen people for the movie. Mr. Stark rightfully pointed out that, due to casting limits in HM3, I needed to downsize. So I removed two minor characters and made a third a very minor character that didn't need to be cast by a named star.

2.You don't get involved in top budget productions as often as other CMP's authors. Do you feel particularly pressured with this ambitious release?

Yes and no. I always get a little worked up just before one of my movies is released, but I don't know if it's caused by pressure. The recent successes of Game Boy 3, Conspiracy Of Life and To Catch A Thief takes quite a bit of pressure off this movie. At one point, Mr. Stark was laying the success of the season on its shoulders. Thankfully, I don't need to carry that weight any more.

3.I presume you are planning to write sequels for this movie if it works...

It's been a long time plan of mine to bring all three Dragonlance Chronicles to the big screen. This first movie has been in the works for a long time, almost as long as I've been writing for Crazy Moon Pictures. If these three movies work as well as I hope, I also plan to release the three Dragonlance Legends novels which concern themselves with the relationship between the warrior Caramon and his twin brother Raistlin.

4.Each of your movies is different from the rest. You have tried almost every genre. In what genre do you feel more comfortable as screenwriter?

I don't really have a favored genre. Once a good idea hits me, I try to stay as faithful to the original idea as I can while I write the screenplay for it. Whether that idea turns out to be a drama or a comedy or something else is somewhat out of my ability to control. I just follow where ever the idea leads. Having said that, I really would like to take Mr. Collins crown as dramatic author from him, but I'm afraid I'm not nearly as good as writer as he is.

5.A personal curiosity: will there ever be a 'Fallout 3'?

I've been working on a third sequel since the success of the second movie. It's been very difficult for me to hammer out a good enough plot that can be told in more than three paragraphs. With three Fallout games to choose from, you would think I have more than enough plot idea to choose from, but I'm afraid nothing has seemed to work quite right yet. But, yes, there will be a third Fallout movie sometime in the future.

EWAN MCGREGOR

‘You need an adventure hero? Call McGregor.’ That seems to be a pattern in CMP’s world. Although he has proved to be a solid talent for drama, comedy and any other movies genre, Ewan Mcgregor seems to be specialized in adventure movies in CMP’s world. Almost every CMP’s author has wanted Ewan in one of his movies some time, which proves his big popularity in the Studio. Also, after playing the young Obi Wan in the second Star Wars’ trilogy, he has joined through CMP the other most important franchise in movie history, Indiana Jones, by playing the father of Indy in his younger years at CMP. This week, Ewan takes the lead of what promises to be another major CMP’s franchise, ‘Dragonlance’. So this week we take a look at the hero, Mr. Ewan McGregor.

DR. JONES AND THE SWORD OF FAITH
Steven Spielberg / Joey Stark
B.O.: 96 mill. / N.Gains: 75 mill.
He was the young Obi Wan. Now, he is the young Dr. Henry Jones, father of Indy. So both Alec Guinness and Sean Connery had the face of Ewan in his younger years. Ewan made his debut in CMP with the first of the many adventure movies he would make for the Studio after this one.

DIVE IN THE SUN
Michael Mann / Jack Hammer
B.O.: 53 mill / N.Gains: 20 mill.
A classic commando adventure. Jack Hammer payed tribute with this movie to classics like ‘The Guns Of Navarone’ and Ewan teamed up with other CMP’s big stars like Paul Bettany, Orlando Bloom and Hugh Jackman. It was a very entertaining movie far away from nowadays effectism that deserves to be revisited.

PLANETSIDE

James Cameron / Marcus Trax
B.O.: 93 mill. / N.gains: 65 mill.
From World War II to outer space. Ewan joined a top notch cast in this sci-fi adventure about colonists settling in a new planet. This top budget production was meant to become the first installment of a new franchise but Trax’s retirement let it without the expected sequels.

HITMAN: SHADOW OF A LEGEND
Tony Scott / John Daws
B.O.: 82 mill. / N.Gains: 58 mill.
Ewan had the arguable honor of being the man that killed the legendary Hitman in the last installment of this popular saga. For once, Ewan wasn’t the hero but the villain of the story. We will never forgive him for killing a CMP’s icon.

DR. JONES AND THE CURSED TREASURE
Steven Spielberg / Joey Stark
B.O.: 122 / N.Gains: 152
Ewan plays again Indy’s father. And it became the first ‘100’ in Ewan’s career. This was a better movie than the first installment of the saga and moviegoers responded so nicely. A third Dr. Jones’ movie has been repeatedly announced by Joey Stark but, at this moment, nobody knows when will it be developed.

FLASHMAN’S TRAVELS
Kenneth Branagh / James Bradley
B.O.: 88 mill. / N.Gains: 70 mill.
‘Dr.Jones’, ‘Hitman’ and now ‘Flashman’… Ewan has been part of some of the most popular CMP’s franchises. Here, he faced pirates again after ‘Dr. Jones and the Cursed Treasure’, being the heroic White Rajah, good friend of Flashy but not a coward like him.

THE GREEN CHILDREN
Mike Newell / Matt Kubrick
B.O.: 166 / N.Gains: 128
His good friend Steven Spielberg, producer of this movie, called him to play a minor role in it. The movie meant the biggest box office’s hit in Ewan’s career in CMP so far. Ewan proved again that he does not mind to play supporting characters if the offer is interesting enough.

HUMAN AXIS
Christopher Nolan / David Makalaster
B.O.: 124 mill. / N.Gains: 104 mill.
A quality sci-fi movie critically acclaimed. Ewan shared with Jennifer Connelly and Joseph Fiennes the dilemma about the future of mankind in this adult sci-fi story. It meant his third ‘100’ and probably the best movie he has made for the Studio.

EARTH 3K
JJ Abrams / Josh Collins
B.O.: 93 mill. / N.Gains: 34 mill.
Sci-fi again but now a non-stop action flick. A humanoid Ewan lived his own peculiar Romeo and Juliet story with the human Jennifer Garner in this movie. At the end, both died. But their son survived. For obvious reasons, Ewan won’t be in the announced sequel of this story. Shia LaBeouf (his son here but, as a curiosity, his grandson from Dr. Henry Jones’ point of view) will replace him ahead of this saga.

THE PRINCESS AND THE CAPTAIN
Stephen Frears / Trent Nielsen
B.O.: 38 mill. / N. Losses: 2 mill.
For once, Ewan was offered a dramatic role in CMP. He played here the husband of his cast mate in ‘Planetside’, Rachel Weisz, Queen of England here. The movie meant the only box office’s flop in Ewan’s career in CMP. But at least he proved he can do something more than playing heroes.

DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT
Guillermo Del Toro / Richard Franzwa
Awaiting Release
Jude Law was rejected by the Studio to star this fantasy adventure and Ewan was chosen to replace him. So he has returned to his natural place in CMP: a top budget production, a heroic character, a new franchise… Stark, Hammer, Bradley, Daws, Trax, Kubrick, Makalaster, Collins, Nielsen and now Richard Franzwa… Everybody at CMP likes to work with Ewan so it seems like his future in CMP is almost guaranteed.

Zach Braff and Zooey Deschanel co-star the new Marc Webb’s comedy, ‘The Bus’. An appealing starring couple for an appealing movie opening up in theatres this week. Here we have both at the New York’s premiere of the movie.

Do you like 3D? Hope so. Because the new trend that invades Hollywood (even Scorsese is going to make a movie in 3D!) is passing on CMP. The Studio has only released one 3D movie so far, the animated feature ‘He-Man and Masters Of The Universe’. But there are quite a few projects to be developed in the future that will be shot in 3D. Among then, Collins has announced at his blog that a sequel of ‘The Fantastic Mansion’ might be shot in 3D. Also Kubrick is planning to use the 3D in his announced sequel of ‘Deep Silence’ (yes, that artsy movie he is not making for the money…). So, although I hate to wear those glasses, I am afraid that it is the unstoppable sign of the times…

One of the movies that might be shot using the 3D technique is - believe it or not - a new installment of the wildest CMP’s saga ever, ‘Reform School Girls’. After his experience with the first sequel, ‘Tracks Of Blood’, Joey Star is planning to write a third episode of this karate-lesbian-wildly violent series of movies originally created by Matt Kubrick. This third movie would focus on the character played by Michelle Rodriguez in the first movie and Stark and Kubrick have mentioned in recent interviews that he and Stark are considering shooting it in 3D… Yes, again hair-rising news, isn’t it?

No 3D announced related to these ones (thanks, God!), but it has been confirmed by CMP’s sources that Dawson Edwards is working hard on his Superheroes Squad. Sequels for ‘The Flash’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ are ready and waiting for green light. No release date has been set yet but CMP wants to release both movies before developing the also announced sequel of Chad Taylor’s ‘Justice League’. The only Edwards’ superhero whose sequel is not confirmed is Aquaman. Although the Aquaman movie was eaten alive by critics (and the character was punished being excluded of the Justice League), the truth is that it made a great box office. And that’s usually reason more than enough for Harry Stark to support a sequel.

Ok, and more sequels’ news this week. Ridley Scott has stated in a recent interview that he would like to develop a sequel of ‘Edge Of Human’, the latest Most Wanted Sequel GMA winner and a sequel itself of the classic ‘Blade Runner’. Steve Connors, author of the screenplay, had no intention of writing any sequel, as he liked the ending of the movie, leaving us all with the doubt of the real identity of Evan Rachel Wood’s character. But Scott mentioned in the interview that he is having conversations with Connors about it and the chance of developing a sequel is bigger at this moment than it was some months ago.

And this one is confirmed and also involves Ridley Scott. After the applauded return of the ‘Uncommon Valour’ saga this Season, Jack Hammer seems to be decided to write a fifth adventure for Brosnan and Knightley. There’s no screenplay yet, but Hammer has announced his intention of working on it. The saga might even last more than five movies if audiences keep supporting it.

And I end up this week announcing that the people at CMP have already begun working in the organization of the 13th GMA Edition that will probably take place in New York. There is a strong GMA buzz already running through CMP’s corridors involving some movies. Besides the movies to be released in the upcoming weeks, bets are rising for movies like ‘The Lovers Stages’, ‘Uncommon Valour: Only The Valiant’, ‘The Forgotten’, ‘Ms. Jordon’, ‘The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier and Clay’, ‘To Catch A Thief’ or ‘The Orphan Train’. But who knows? You all know the GMA are always surprising and, as usual, joy will mix with disappointments when the nominations are announced.
