MODERN WARFARE

Action / War
Cast: Christian Bale, Daniel Day-Lewis, Clancy Brown, Chris Pine, Sam Worthington, Jay Hernandez, Benicio del Toro, Mehcad Brooks, Karl Urban
Director: Peter Berg
Producer: Tony Scott
Screenwriter: Chad Taylor

Box Office: 50 mill.
Net Losses: 3 mill.

Stark’s Reaction:
It is so shocking that a movie that has made 50 millions in box office does not reach net gains. I can only find two reasons. First, the production budget was pretty high (including shooting in different locations all over the world and the high salaries demanded by Bale, Day-Lewis or Del Toro). Second, the poor sales at the DVD market. People were not interested in buying an expensive DVD full of extras this time. So this movie means a sad record: Tony Scott has worked either as producer or director in 12 CMP’s movies and Christian Bale has worked in 14 CMP’s movies. And this is the first box office’s flop for both ever in their prolific CMP’s career.

F-ZERO GX

Animation / Action / Racing
Cast Of Voices: Josh Hartnett, Famke Janssen, John Malkovich, Alan Rickman, Forest Whitaker, Terrence Howard, Spencer Breslin, Katie Holmes
Director: Karyn Kusama
Screenwriter: Dawson Edwards

Box Office: 50 mill.
Net Gains: 10 mill.

Stark’s Reaction:
Half the box office made by ‘F-Zero’… The Studio will go on with the announced new installments of this franchise. But I hope it can be revamped.

THE SHIELD

Horror / Slasher
Cast: Jerry O’Connell, Kelly Brook, Vinnie Jones, R.Lee Ermey, Sarah Shahi, Monica Keena, Tony Todd, Kelly Rowland, Christopher Lloyd
Director: Lexi Alexander
Producer: Midnight Movies
Screenwriter: Matt Kubrick

Box Office: 19 mill.
Net Losses: 18 mill.

Stark’s Reaction:
Hit or miss? Ok, this was the turn for ‘miss’. Horror slashers are always such uncertain releases. Pffff, this has been a much harder week than I could have expected…

MODERN WARFARE

‘A few Seasons ago, the now retired Ben Tyler adapted the popular console game ‘Command & Conquer’, directed by Michael Bay. And watching this ‘Modern Warfare’, I could not stop thinking that Berg and Taylor have repeated almost the same formula of that movie. Political fiction, tough guys, lots of testosterone and pretended sophisticated dialogues like ‘Captain, the platoon from the USMC 1st Force Recon is ready to fly to the Behring Sea. The NEST is also on its way according to the information provided by SEAL…’ You know what I mean… This is the kind of movie where you don’t know very well what’s going on. You just seat and enjoy the action show besides all the military paraphernalia. And yes, having the feeling that you have seen it all before.’
-Roy Winslow

‘ ‘Modern Warfare’ develops an alternative geo-political reality. It has obvious parallelisms with the real situation in Middle East and world terrorism. But I wonder why Taylor considered necessary to create that alternative reality instead of developing a plot based on real events and characters. I mean, there are things happening in the real world interesting enough to not needing the use of the fictional characters and scenarios of a console game. Relating the plot to real events (Al-Qaeda, the current conflicts in nations like Egypt or Libya, etc.) would have provided more interest and credibility to this production. Besides that, you can notice the effort made by Berg and Scott to build up a luxurious production including some spectacular action sequences. But underneath the production design effort, there is a certain lack of entertainment in the story told on screen.’
-Vic Carter

‘I am not a member of that segment of audience that loves 3D and CGI and enjoy superheroes movies and silly action comedies as much as the popcorns and the soda. I am an adult. And I miss good action movies oriented to adult audiences and not only to brainless teenagers with their faces full of pimples. So I must thank Taylor, Berg and Scott for making an action movie looking more for usually ignored moviegoers like me. I had a wonderful time watching ‘Modern Warfare’. Taylor has worried to create an elaborated plot and not only a ‘superhero-faces-wannaruletheworld-villain’. Bale and Day-Lewis enrich the movie with their screen presence. And Berg has shot the story with nerve and not falling into silly excesses just to make an easy impact. I hope CMP keeps worrying about more adult audiences in future movies.’
-Chris Burgess

F-ZERO GX

‘This sequel of the brilliant ‘F-Zero’ has a problem: it has no plot. ‘F-Zero’ developed a plot with goods and bads and an ‘anime’ spirit that perfectly matched with the visual style of the movie. It had a story. This sequel is only about a race. ‘F-Zero GX’ completely abandons the plotlines opened in ‘F-Zero’ and focuses during its whole length in a race. And watching a race during nearly 90 minutes is probably one of the most boring experiences I have gone through in years. I just can’t understand the effort made by Dawson Edwards to ruin what promised to be the most successful and spectacular animation franchise ever developed by CMP’.
-Jackie O’Callaghan

‘The problem adapting console games is that sometimes the adaptator (I mean, the screenwriter) feels obliged to stay too loyal to the original game. I can understand that ‘F-Zero GX’ can be a very entertaining console game to play driving those futuristic vehicles in a vertiginous race. But when that’s translated to a big screen feature, the entertainment of it all simply disappears. It is not the same playing a console game than sitting on a movie theatre to watch a race. All the talent that Karyn Kusama and Dawson Edwards showed in the first movie of this franchise has suddenly evaporated in this sequel. I just hope they change the course of it in the already announced sequels.’
-Tim Reeve

‘These ‘F-Zero’ movies are a spectacular example of the technical virtuosity that have reached nowadays animated movies. Everything is possible in animation. And Kusama takes the best of all the chances that offers today the quality of animation. The camera angles, the editing, the use of colours, the visually outstanding design… Everything is perfect in this movie… from a technical point of view. But, as we often say in movie reviews, it is important not to forget that beyond all the technicalities there is an essential element in the art of moviemaking: entertainment. I understand that Kusama must have enjoyed the creative talent she has developed making this movie. But she has forgotten that she had to make a movie not only technically perfect but also entertaining.’
-Amy Ratched

THE SHIELD

‘How can be made so many mistakes when putting up a cast? Matt Kubrick should consider firing the Casting Director of Midnight Movies. While watching this movie, I made a peculiar experiment: I kept watching it but imagining the same sequences with other talents playing the characters. And you know what? The result in my imagination was a pretty entertaining and worth to watch movie. I know big stars do not like to work in horror movies. But between ‘First Division’ stars and the ‘Amateur League’, there is a wide range of talents to choose. So I wonder why Kubrick or Alexander or whoever put up this cast decided to choose a group of people with only one thing in common: an embarrassing lack of the minimum acting talent possible.’
-Charlie Kiggs

‘’The Shield’ is a honest effort to offer something more than the routine ‘slasher’ movie full of gory scenes and produced with a restricted budget. In fact, it is much more elaborated in terms of storyline, scenarios, special effects and production design that many of the previous Midnight Movies’ features. Maybe, its main problem is that, together with that, it is also one of the less scary horror movies developed by Kubrick’s company. ‘The Shield’ is more a solid action movie than a horror movie strictu sensu. So, if you are expecting to be scared, you will be disappointed with this movie. Better enjoy the sexy chicks in it and some worthy action moments and leave the fright for a better occasion.’
-Andrew Stampton

‘Would you pay a ticket to watch a movie starred by Kelly Brook and Jerry O’Connell with a villain played by Vinnie Jones? Probably, the answer of a high percentage of moviegoers would be the same than mine. And that’s the reason why this movie has flopped so painfully at box office. It is very difficult to find a reason to choose this movie. You just cannot trust a movie production directed by Lexi Alexander and with such a shocking cast of non-appealing talents (at least for something that is not an erotic or soft porn movie). Some times it is so easy to understand why things simply do not work.’
-Anne Roman

SOME CONCLUSIONS
By Harry Stark

Season 16 has been another extraordinary Season in terms of box office’s success. Although it has not reached the amazing numbers of Season 15, still seems like almost everything works in box office lately for CMP. It is true that the last two weeks of the Season have been pretty disappointing but I hope that does not mean a downward trend. We are far away from the hard times we had at box office only a few Seasons ago.

The good thing is that I think Season 16 has also been an extraordinary Season in terms of quality. In my very personal opinion, it is the Season with a highest number of top quality movies. That’s what makes the upcoming GMA Edition particularly intriguing for me. Voters have so many good things to choose from.

This Season, we had some remarkable farewells but also some nice welcomes.

On the farewell side, three iconic CMP’s franchises reached their end this Season: ‘The Dark Tower’, ‘Silver Sable’ and ‘The Forgotten’. They are all now part of CMP’s history. It feels kind of sad when a saga that has become part of the Studio’s identity gets to an end. But I am sure none of us will ever forget these three brilliant series of movies.

On the welcome side, we had two new screenwriters joining us: Michael Banno and Lawrence Abernathy. It is always nice having someone new on board. The shame here is that I can’t still confirm if they will keep writing for the Studio as I have never heard from them again after they released their movies.

But still we have other new screenwriters making their debut too during next Season…

The good news

‘The Dark Tower’ is the only release of the Season that enters into the alltimes’ top lists. The 414 millions of net gains generated by the movie turns it into the top 3 highest net gains ever.

The balance between adaptations and original concepts keep balanced the same way than past Season: 17 original concepts and 13 adaptations. I like that. That means that the creativity of our writers stay fresh and always looking for new concepts and ideas.

Only 3 flops at box office. One less than Season 15. That can make us think that anything works in box office. And that would be a big mistake. But it is nice watching most of CMp’s movies making net gains!

You know I love ‘sleepers’. It is a great feeling when a movie you do not expect a big box office from suddenly becomes an unexpected blockbuster. And we had quite a few of them this Season: ‘Foreclosed’, ‘The Show’, ‘Love Lost’ or ‘Whatever Happened With Holden Caulfield?’ made box office’s numbers way much higher than expected. I love that!

The bad news

Another Season with not too many bad news…

As it happens some times, quality and box office’s numbers didn’t go the same way all the time. Movies I considered top quality productions didn’t make too remarkable box offices. ‘The Cool’, ‘Dark Shadows’ or ‘The Respected’ were unfairly punished by moviegoers.

Reviews were controversial some times. We need to remember that movie reviews are only individual opinions. We can agree or disagree with them. But that’s how it works… Personally, I disagree often with things I read at ‘The Critics Corner’ but, you know, movie critics have their own prejudices against certain genres or talents. We have to live with that.

And talking about reviews, I miss Mr. Thumb!

MODERN WARFARE

Action / War

The Cast: Christian Bale, Daniel Day-Lewis, Clancy Brown, Chris Pine, Sam Worthington, Jay Hernandez, Benicio del Toro, Mehcad Brooks, Karl Urban

The Director: Peter Berg
The Producer: Tony Scott
The Screenwriter: Chad Taylor

The Plot:

In 2011, a Russian Ultranationalist by the name of Imran Zakhaev (C.Brown) is determined to return his homeland to Soviet rule. Zakhaev knows the United States of America would never allow this to happen, so he draws international attention away from his plans by funding a coup d'état in an unnamed Middle Eastern country, organized by a local separatist leader named Khaled Al-Asad (B.del Toro). Zakhaev, his son Victor, Al-Asad, and another powerful individual make up what the media calls the "Four Horsemen". The British and American governments, who discover the plot, initiate a police action to stop the uprisings in both regions.

We see a montage of news clips detailing the situation. It is on the TV as Sergeant Paul Jackson (C.Pine) talks to his fiancee. She is worried, but he calms her nerves. Meanwhile, Sgt. "Soap" MacTavish (C.Bale) is on the phone with his father, a vet himself, describing the environment he's been put in.

On a mission in the Bering Sea, Soap, Captain Price (D.Day-Lewis), "Gaz"(S.Worthington), and several other Special Air Service members find a nuclear device onboard a cargo ship. Suddenly, the ship is attacked, and the team evacuate with the cargo manifest, which provides evidence of ties between the Russian Ultranationalist Party and a rebel faction in the Middle East. After President Al-Fulani of the Middle Eastern country is executed on live television and Al-Asad takes control, the SAS rescue their compromised informant in the Russian Ultranationalist Party, Nikolai.

In an American invasion of the Middle Eastern country, a platoon from the USMC 1st Force Recon, led by Lieutenant Vasquez (J.Hernandez) and Sgt. Jackson, searches for Al-Asad, but only manages to secure a television station broadcasting Al-Asad's propaganda. During the final stages of the operation, United States Central Command is notified by SEAL Team Six of a Russian nuclear weapon nearby, and sends the NEST to disarm it. Vasquez and Jackson race through the warfare, trying to reach their rescue helicopter. Jackson is shot, but Vasquez pulls him along, and gets him to the helicopter. But when as the helicopter is in air, the bomb detonates, leveling the whole city, and killing everybody in the radius. The helicopter was not able to make it, and is destroyed. Jackson survives the initial crash and crawls away from the wreckage, but takes a long deep stare at the aftermath, and dies on the ground.

The British learn that Al-Asad fled the country before the USMC's invasion. With the help of their informant Nikolai, the SAS finds and interrogates Al-Asad. After learning from him that Zakhaev supplied the nuclear bomb, Captain Price executes Al-Asad. Price then has a flashback of his mission to eliminate Zakhaev in Prypiat, Ukraine, 15 years earlier. In the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zakhaev took advantage of the turmoil to profit from nuclear proliferation and used his new wealth to lure soldiers from the Soviet Army to form his Ultranationalist Party. Price was paired with Captain MacMillan to carry out the black op assassination of Zakhaev. After stealthily sneaking into Prypiat and taking up a position in the top room of an abandoned hotel, MacMillan spotted Zakhaev while Price fired a .50 BMG sniper rifle, but Zakhaev survived, losing only an arm. Price and MacMillan were pursued from the scene and narrowly escaped, with MacMillan sustaining an injured leg in the process.

Back in the present, a joint operation, by the SAS regiment under the command of Captain Price, a USMC Force Recon unit led by Staff Sergeant Griggs (M.Brooks), and forces from the Russian military led by Sgt. Kamarov (K.Urban), is undertaken to stop Zakhaev. They capture his son Victor to learn of Zakhaev's whereabouts, but before they can question him, Zakhaev's son commits suicide. Zakhaev becomes enraged, blaming Western nations for the death of his son, and plans to retaliate by launching ballistic missiles armed with nuclear warheads at the United States. When SAS/USMC operatives arrive at the facility, Zakhaev manages to launch two missiles towards the United States. However, the squad successfully deactivates the missiles. They escape the facility in military trucks, Zakhaev's forces in hot pursuit.

Before the squad can escape across a nearby bridge, it is destroyed by a gunship, leaving them trapped. Zakhaev's forces arrive and engage the remaining members of the strike force. Suddenly, Gaz receives a call from Sergeant Kamarov, informing him that his forces are on their way to help the American and British forces. On the bridge, a gas tanker explodes, incapacitating most soldiers nearby except Griggs, who is shot while trying to pull MacTavish to safety. Zakhaev, along with two of his soldiers, finish off Gaz and other surviving members of the strike force. Before he reaches Soap and Price, he is distracted by the destruction of his gunship and the arrival of a Russian military helicopter. As Zakhaev looks away, Price slides his pistol to Soap, who shoots and kills Zakhaev and his two guards. When Kamarov and his team arrive, MacTavish is evacuated to safety, while a Russian medic attempts to resuscitate Price.

Stark’s Comment:
This one should work without major problem. I expect a solid box office without big surprises for the good or for the bad.

Behind The Scenes:
-Peter Berg only previous work in CMP was the flopped Dawson Edwards’ debut ‘The Killing Run’.
-The movie is based on the console game ‘Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’. If it works, Chad Taylor has stated that he would consider turning it into the beginning of a new franchise.
-Tony Scott has produced before four movies not directed by him. All of them were directed by his brother Ridley: ‘Uncommon Valour: Only The Valiant’, ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ and the two installments of the ‘New World’ saga. He won the Best Picture GMA as producer with ‘The Gunpowder Plot’.
-Doug Liman was considered as director of this movie before Berg finally got the job.

F-ZERO GX

Animation / Action / Racing

The Cast Of Voices: Josh Hartnett, Famke Janssen, John Malkovich, Alan Rickman, Forest Whitaker, Terrence Howard, Spencer Breslin, Katie Holmes

The Director: Karyn Kusama
The Screenwriter: Dawson Edwards

The Plot:

Desert. We see dust rising from far away. It grows bigger and bigger, coming closer and closer to the screen. Then a car races by, and seconds later a blue blur follows behind. A green lizard like alien zooms by in a F-Zero race car. He's panicked and keeps looking behind him. We then see the controls of a different race car. Through the radio we hear a little robot's voice (V.O. S.Breslin) telling the driver to hurry up because the race starts soon. We don't see the driver, but he replies "Don't worry triple Q, I've got this. Falcon out."

We then see the exterior of the famed Blue Falcon race car steadily catching up with the lizard's car. The two vehicles pass by a poorly handmade sign in the desert that reads "Red Canyon". The Blue Falcon catches up to him, and they bump each other until the lizard panics and crashes into a giant boulder. Captain Falcon (V.O. J.Hartnett) gets out of his car, and we get our first look at our hero. He arrests the lizard, tells QQQ to alert the bondsman and not the Police Commander because being a bounty hunter means not reporting to the police anymore. As Captain Falcon walks back to his car, we see Samurai Goroh (V.O. J.Malkovich) and his thugs watching high above on a cliff, smirking.

We then skip to see Captain Falcon preparing for the F-Zero Grand Prix. The little rolling robot, QQQ, explains how Mute City got its name. The over one billion people living in Mute City consist of all kinds of sentient life, but most of the city becomes eerily mute on race day. Because on that day, everyone gathers in one place for the highest form of entertainment, F-Zero Racing! Falcon gets a video call from Jody Summers (V.O. Famke Jansen) who wishes him luck on the Prix. Captain Falcon takes the time to ask her out, seemingly for the millionth time. And for the millionth time, she rejects him, claiming she doesn't date racers. He tells her that's good, "Because I'm really a bounty hunter...who races."

As they hang up, Captain Falcon notices a frustrated blond woman working on her car. So he goes over to help her. She introduces herself as Jane Christie (V.O. K.Holmes), a late entry to the Grand Prix. The two flirt as Cap gives her pointers, and she eventually kisses him on the cheek for his kindness. While Jane walks away smiling, Cap is approached by a man dressed in classic racing attire and a scarf around his neck. His name is Dr. Robert Stewart (V.O. A.Rickman) and he's super arrogant. He warns that Jane might not be a "proper citizen". Dr. Stewart begins bragging about his father's great career as a champion F-Zero racer, and how he'll be a star soon. He goes on to say that his expensive training is the reason why he'll succeed.

The race is about to start, Falcon notices the lizard criminal is at the starting block. He asks QQQ how he got out, and records show that it was a bond paid by "Shadow Industries". Captain Falcon realizes that Black Shadow (V.O. F.Whitaker) got him out of jail. He video calls the Mute City Police Commander (V.O. T.Howard) and they yell at each other about the quick release. The Grand Prix is set to begin, when QQQ informs Cap that in between the four cities they race through, they get a break at the halfway mark. This will allow Captain Falcon to confront the lizard.

A rock hits Cap's car and we see Samurai Goroh sticking his tongue out at the hero. A giant screen above the track shows the courses that the racers will go through. The race will begin in Mute City (through skyscrapers and large jumps), then to the White Land (through snow mountains), then Fire Field (through an oil refinery where flames sprout), and ending at the Casino Palace (bright lights and lots of twists). As the lights begin to tick down to green, we see a split screen of all the racers just before...GO!!!

At the halfway point of the race, Dr. Stewart leads with Goroh in second, Falcon in third and Jane Christie in fourth. Its night as Captain Falcon sees the alien lizard leaving the drivers' motel and follows him. He sees Black Shadow smuggling something with the Summers Coprs. logo on it, from the alien. Captain Falcon immediately takes action but this time, Goroh pops up to assist Falcon. Its a six on two fight as Captain Falcon fights Black Shadown and his goons. All while Goroh and the alien shoot at each other. The alien shoots Goroh, which distracts Falcon and allows Black Shadow to escape with his package, but he leaves behind a small ripped piece of paper that reads "CLO". The alien is chased down by Falcon and is given a huge FALCON PUNCH for his troubles. Being the proud man that he is, Samurai Goroh makes it clear that he doesn't need two arms to beat Falcon in a race.

As the second half the race begins, the Police Commander comes through Falcon's radio, thanking him for his assistance. He tells Cap that the alien gave up a new operation called "Deathborn" involving high powered devices based off G-Diffusers energy systems. The race is drawing to its conclusion with Stewart, Falcon, Goroh and Jane all fighting for the gold. Goroh and Stewart bump each other trying to catch up to Falcon, Jane races from behind and crashes into Captain Falcon.

As the car flips in the air, Cap screams "JODY!!!!" The crash throws Falcon's vehicle over the finish line, injuring the racer. Jane crosses the finish line but never stops driving...Next we see Captain Falcon laying in the hospital, but his eyes are blurry. He thinks he sees Jane walk in his room crying...he blacks out. When he wakes up, Jody and Dr. Stewart are there by his side. Stewart tells him that he tended to Captain Falcon's injuries himself.

They inform him that he still won the race despite crashing, but Jane hasn't been seen since that day. Cap grabs Jody's hand, and promises that when he's done loving racing, he'll love her even more. We then see QQQ bring in his trophy and they celebrate in the room. END

After the credits we see Black Shadow reporting to a dark figure that we can't see. Shadow mentions that the plan worked perfectly, and the world will soon be controlled by Deathborn.

Stark’s Comment:
‘F-Zero’ was released in Season 13. It made excellent numbers: 108 millions at box office and 135 millions of net gains. I comfortably predict a ‘+100’ here.

Behind The Scenes:
-Alan Rickman, Spencer Breslin and Katie Holmes are the new voices not heard in the first movie.
-Dawson Edwards has already written a third installment of this franchise based on a console games saga.
-This is the third work of Alan Rickman this Season after ‘Snow’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’.
-Spencer Breslin has starred this Season the comedy ‘Malcolm Manboobs’.
-John Malkovich has been seen this Season in ‘Athena’.

‘JASON VS. LEATHERFACE’

The words explode as 3D blows it's way through the title.

The Plot:

As the credits begin we get the CMP logo followed by the Midnight Movies logo in the shape of a police officer’s badge.

Then the movie begins proper with a NYC female newscaster named Janice Peterson (K.Brook). She is talking about a rash of slayings around the NYC city area. The murders are still unsolved and people are told to be aware and to lock their doors at night. The following day we are introduced to several more characters. A police officer named Joe Rynone (J.O’Connell), his partner Linda Clemens (Sarah Shahi), police seargent Vick Cruthers (R.L.Ermey) who is angry about the murders going unsolved and no leads whatsoever.

Janice senses a hot story in the murders and promises her camera man Lucas Cole that she will be the one to break it. Janice also lives with her sister Amanda Peterson (M. Keena) who is coming off of a bad break up and works as a stripper at a sleazy club. Janice is always trying to get Amanda to quit the job and find something to better herself. Amanda's boss is named Tony (T.Todd) and she is good friends with one of the girls nicknamed Kitty (K.Rowland).

Late one night we follow a pair of teens speeding in a car: a male and female out having fun, speeding through streets and alleyways. Finally they draw the attention of a cop car. They slow down and pull over for him and the cop drives ahead and pulls over while the two sit and wait.

After a few minutes the cop gets out but we don't see his face. Just him walking towards the car his feet on the pavement. The two teens in the car look at him while they get edgy and scared but we don't know why. We get a glimpse of his scarred hands as he stands there.

Finally the cop pulls out his pistol and shoots them both multiple times. He gets back into his car and drives away.

The following day the news is all over this but still no leads and the cops block her from getting to close to the crime scene. Janice is upset, Joe and his partner are in trouble for not getting any leads. There are some footprints that is all. The audience sees the other characters go about their day. We learn more about them about them and their love lives. Janice is sick of being lonely, Amanda really does hate her job Joe and Linda secretly have feelings for each other but won't admit it.

It's night again and we follow a young man walking through the dark streets lit by street lamps. He is talking on the phone with someone and he is apparently mad and screaming at the person on the other end. He walks into an alley probably taking a short cut and he isn't paying attention and runs smack dab into the policeman. He drops his phone on the ground and as he pulls out his paton, the man runs and the cop gives chase through the allways, but eventually after the chase the man is clubbed to death.

Just a short block away Amanda has gotten into a fight with Tony and calls Janice on the phone. It is really late and she can't take it anymore. She is finally quitting her job and needs her sisters help. Janice finally arrives, but so does the policeman, he kills Kitty with a snap of the neck and draws the attention of everyone. He ends up killing Tony with a broken bottle to the throat causing blood to spill everywhere. Janice and Amanda make their escape out the back as the policeman follows. What happens is a series of chases and a phone call to the police and they arrive before the killer can finish them off.

A murderous cop is too unbelievable for the police to bear and they feel Janice and Amanda are mistaken. But Joe and his partner want to help. They promise to watch over their place for the night. They believe that since they are the only witnesses the killer will try and strike at them.

But nothing goes as planned. In a tense sequence Joe and Linda will be attacked by the policeman. Joe is injured, Linda is killed. Joe manages to save the life of Janice but Amanda is killed before managing to drive off the killer policeman we get our first real look at him a scarred face showing signs of burns and damage.

But as the movie progresses Vic will be forced to admit there is a killer policeman and there will be a cat and mouse game as Janice and Joe race to learn his identity and what happened with him and who he is.

As the movie races towards it's conclusion we are introduced to a doctor named Water Smith (C.Lloyd) that helped bring a dead cop back to life. He was a cop that was set up as working with the mafia and betraying good people. The real pereptraters were never caught. He was later attacked by a gang on the streets and was killed. The doctor brought him back to life in an experiment and now the cop named Alex Mathers (V.Jones) wages a one man war against the city himself. He feels no pain, no emotion.

There are several car chases, and quick get aways. The doctor is murdered by the man he brought back. Finally the cops surround Alex in a dilapidated building with Janice and Joe inside. They both survive after a fight between Alex and Joe and the building comes down around them burying Alex. They both survive and are taken to the hospital.

Stark’s Comment:
You just never know with ‘slashers’… Some times they work, some times don’t. I think this has a more elaborated plot and production design than usual so maybe the coin will fall this time on the right side.

Behind The Scenes:
-Coincidence or not, many people in this cast are ‘ex something’. Director Lexi Alexander was a martial arts champion. And we have an ex football player (Vinnie Jones), ex model (Kelly Brook), ex cheerleader (Sarah Shahi) and a former member of the band ‘Destiny’s Child’ (Kelly Rowland).
-The women in the cast are all CMP’s debutantes.
-The men in the cast have all previous experience in CMP: Vinnie Jones (‘Daisy Lane’), R. Lee Ermey (‘A Standing Eight’, ‘Preacher’), Christopher Lloyd (‘Eureka!’) and Jerry O’Connell (‘Pinocchio’s Terror’).

WOMAN: This new Sofia Coppola’s drama written by Chad Taylor tells the story of a woman, played by January Jones, who grows up as a human being as she meets different types of other women while she travels all over the world. Among then, she will meet Kasia Smutniak in France, Anna Friel in England, Sofia Vergara in Spain, Emile De Ravin in Australia and also Lauren Conrad back at home in the US. All these actresses are CMP’s debutantes except for Anna Friel, who could be seen in ‘Pinocchio’s Terror’.

ESCAPE FROM HELL: Sam Raimi has chosen a starry starring couple to lead the cast of this fantasy and dark action movie written by Josh Collins. Christian Bale, who can be seen in this week’s release ‘Modern Warfare’, and the very active lately Denzel Washington, seen this Season in ‘The Cool’ and ‘Foreclosed’, will try to escape together from Hell.

ALABAMA: Last time we knew from Will Smith in CMP, it was when he succeeded in his directional debut in Season 12 with the acclaimed ‘John and Tommie’. Five Seasons later, he returns again at last to CMP’s world and he will repeat the experience of directing a story written again by Chad Taylor. This time, Smith is going to star the movie too. It tells the story of a passionate relationship between a black man and a white woman during the troubled times of the 1960’s in deep America. And the woman Smith falls in love with will be no other than the always active in CMP Natalie Portman. More than interesting starring couple for this interesting project.

DRAGONLANCE: DRAGONS OF SPRING DAWNING: Green light for the third installment of the blockbuster fantasy saga written by Richard Franzwa. Guillermo Del Toro directs and produces again the movie. The second installment of this franchise made a box office of 260 millions and net gains of 274 millions so this one is expected to become one of the most successful releases of the upcoming new Season.

FOOD AND OTHER LANGUAGES: We are used to see Michelle Rodriguez as a tough girl. But she also has a sweeter side. And she is going to show it in this dramedy written by the debutante Jack Adkins and directed by Ron Howard. Adrien Brody, seen this Season in ‘A Tangled Web’, co-stars this movie about the relationship between a man and a woman with a very different background.

KITE: Garrett Hedlund, not seen in CMP since he starred the war drama ‘John Wayne Must Die’ returns to CMP with this story written by Dawson Edwards and directed by Paul Greengrass. Hedlund plays not only Emma Stone’s colleague as professional assassin but also her love interest. Ron Perlman – for once, without suffering tons of make-up or digital manipulation – has also joined the cast playing a detective.

THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS: Young actor Armie Hammer makes his debut in CMP in this horror movie directed by Scott Derrickson and written by the also debutante D.R.Cobb. Hammer is best known for playing the Winklevoss twins in ‘The Social Network’. In this one, Hammer plays a student that becomes the physical vessel of Satan. The movie is a remake of a John Carpenter’s film from 1987.

THE UNDERCOVERS: Steve Connors and Steve Carell team up again after the successful experiences of ‘The Revengers’ and ‘Fantasy World’. Chris Weitz makes his debut as director in CMP with this action comedy oriented to family audiences. Connors has described the movie as a mix between the tv series ‘Cover Me: Based On The True Life Of An FBI Family’ and the 1987’s film ‘Stakeout’. Carell plays an FBI agent in charge of a surveillance operation. For the first time, Steve Carell is going to be too the producer of the movie.

GRAND THEFT AUTO: Mehcad Brooks, who releases this week ‘Modern Warfare’, has now joined the cast of this action movie being directed by Martin Campbell and written by Chad Taylor adapting the popular console game. Also in the cast, two CMP’s debutantes: actor, writer and director Brian Cranston and the popular rapper Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., best known as T.I.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING HONEST: And more talents making their debut in CMP in the upcoming movies… Here’s the turn for veteran actress Ellen Burstyn, who will play here the mother of both Kevin Costner and Val Kilmer. A veteran star in CMP’s world also joins the cast: Gary Oldman. Paul Haggis is directing this drama written by Josh Collins.

MATT KUBRICK – ‘THE SHIELD’

This week, Matt Kubrick and Midnight Movies return to ‘slashers’ with ‘The Shield’. Kubrick has had a busy Season, releasing the last installment of ‘The Dark Tower’ saga and also some co-written works with Joey Stark and Dawson Edwards. But he is not taking a rest, as he is already working in upcoming projects, like the return to CMP of his beloved Jason Vorhees. We have talked with him about all this.

1.What do you think that can be considered as novelties in 'The Shield' compared with your previous 'slashers'?

I guess it's the fact that people have done other things besides movies, which is funny because it wasn't at all planned that way. I just scroll through IMDB checking for people that have worked in horror films already and that is how I chose my cast. I wrote it with Vinnie Jones in mind because he is always such a bad ass.

2.You have stated that this movie might be the beginning of a franchise. Is that right?

Yep, I hope this is a brand new horror franchise for Midnight Movies

3.How do you feel now that the hard work of 'The Dark Tower' is over? Nostalgic or relief?

I feel relief because it was hard figuring out how to turn each book into a movie and which plot points to drop or which ones to use, especially the last one because I ended up making stuff up that wasn't included in the book because that was really the only way to do it and I had to drop the whole subplot with Stephen King.

4.'Deep Silence 3' hasn't worked at box office as well as expected. Do you plan getting involved in a fourth movie of this franchise?

Maybe. I have an idea for a fourth.

5.Together with 'The Shield', audiences will have the opportunity to watch the trailer of your upcoming movie with Vorhees and Leatherface.. Can you tell us something more about this project?

The trailer for ‘Jason Vs Leather face’ will play before the Shield giving audiences a sneak peek at what the movie will contain.

MATT KUBRICK’S SLASHERS

Although he is probably the most prolific and also versatile writer in CMP’s history, Matt Kubrick is unfairly best known as the official writer of slasher movies for the Studio. Only after his latest big success with other kind of movies like the epic fantasy saga ‘The Dark Tower’, the acclaimed western ‘Legends Of The West’ or the intimate drama ‘Teenage Wasteland’, Kubrick is getting the recognition he deserves beyond his horror movies. But, as he returns to his natural territory this week with ‘The Shield’ and he also announces the upcoming release of ‘Jason vs. Leatherface’, we have decided to take a look at those gory productions that have made him so popular.

VORHEES: THE EARLY YEARS
Season 1 / Matt Kubrick
B.O.: 89 mill. / N.G.: 51 mill.
Kubrick made his debut as movie director with this resurrection of the iconic ‘Friday, the 13th’ character, Jason Vorhees. Kubrick wanted to tell the story of the character from the beginning. It was the first CMP’s Season and he was also involved in the beginning of his most famous horror saga: ‘Fear The Darkness’. This movie had a sequel in Season 5 (‘Vorhees: The Bloody Years’, directed by Eli Roth), but it became a box office’s disaster. Now, Kubrick is planning to resurrect the character again with ‘Jason Vs. Leatherface’.

LONDON UNDEGROUND
Season 4 / Stephen Sommers
B.O.: 25 mill. / N.L.: 6 mill.
Liv Tyler, Ryan Gosling, Julie Delpy and Sean William Scott lived a nightmare night trying to escape from a killer at the London subway. It wasn’t a bad movie, but it didn’t work in box office. The slasher genre always has had difficulties to succeed at box office in CMP’s world.

BLOOD BEACH
Season 6 / Eli Roth
B.O.: 12 mill. / N.L.: 11 mill.
This movie is deservedly in a top position in the list of the worst movies ever developed by CMP. Critics still do not agree if Roth wanted to make a parody of the movies mixing a slasher killer and hot chicks or if he was taking his job seriously here. One way or the other, it was an awful movie. And CMP’s stars and GMA Winners like Ellen Page and Emile Hirsh were involved in this disaster.

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT
Season 9 / Alexander Aja
B.O.: 40 mill. / N.G.: 35 mill.
Michael Bay, who had worked before with Kubrick in sagas like ‘Wild Cards’ and ‘Robotech’, produced this remake of the 1984’s film. The novelty here is that the movie was starred by a big star like Jake Gyllenhaal. Michelle Trachtenberg, already seen in ‘Blood Beach’, was also back in this one. The movie worked correctly in box office and critics supported it. That helped the slasher genre to resurrect in CMP after the flops of ‘London Underground’ and ‘Blood Beach’.

SISTERS
Season 9 / Tobe Hooper
B.O.: 27 mill. / N.L.: 7 mill.
Many critics consider this one the best ‘slasher’ ever written by Kubrick. It was really scary. But box office’s numbers didn’t make justice and it unfairly flopped. Deanna Russo – seen later in CMP in the ‘Reform School Girls’ saga – leaded the cast of a movie that very much deserves a second watch.

PSYCHO: BLOODLINE
Season 10 / Brian De Palma
B.O.: 43 mill. / N.G.: 17 mill.
A moviemaker far away from his glory days, De Palma, accepted to direct this new return to the universe of Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’. It is surprising to see the now hyper-demanded and hyper-prestigious James Franco starring this movie with Keri Russell, playing the son of Norman Bates. Emma Stone could also be seen in the movie playing a minor role. The film survived at box office without making remarkable numbers.

PINOCCHIO’S TERROR
Season 15 / Alexander Aja
B.O.: 43 mill. / N.G.: 42 mill.
Although Kubrick has focused more lately in other genres, he keeps returning to ‘slashers’ from time to time. In this redefinition of Pinocchio- same way he did with Peter Pan in ‘Cursed Neverland’ -, he teamed up again with Alexander Aja after working together in ‘Wild Cards: Ace In The Hole’, ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ and ‘Bedtime Stories’. The movie made nice net gains proving that ‘slashers’ are always a hit or miss.

The cast of ‘The Shield’ is full of sexy chicks. So we have chosen one of them for this Season’s last picture of the week. Here is for you to enjoy Kelly Brook looking splendorous.
